If installation is included, run basic checks that are safe and appropriate for the appliance and service you ordered. Seller policies and reporting deadlines vary, so check the terms for your specific order.
What should you check when your appliance is delivered?
- Ask to inspect the appliance before signing. If the delivery arrangement permits, ask the crew to unpack it. Check accessible surfaces, corners, and edges for dents, cracks, scratches, bent parts, or other visible defects. Check that the delivered model and included items match your order, and look for missing parts or accessories. Inspect the packaging as well, but intact packaging does not prove the appliance is undamaged. GE Appliances advises inspecting carefully before accepting and signing.
- Report and document any problem immediately. Tell the delivery agent, describe damage or missing items specifically on the paperwork if possible, and take clear photos of the appliance and packaging. Ask what options the seller offers. Depending on its procedure, refusing a damaged delivery may be an option; it is not a uniform process across sellers. Samsung, Walmart Marketplace, and Whirlpool describe their respective processes.
- If installation is included, do basic operating checks before the crew leaves. Use the appliance’s manual and follow the service scope you purchased. GE’s examples include refrigerator lights and water dispenser; range and microwave controls and heating; dishwasher controls, filling, and draining; washer controls, hot- and cold-water filling, and draining; and dryer controls and heating. Not every delivery includes installation or every test, and model-specific instructions take precedence. See GE’s delivery-day guidance.
- Allow time for functions that are not immediate. GE Appliances’ 2026 guidance says a refrigerator can take up to 24 hours to reach its set temperature, and an icemaker may take 12–24 hours to begin making ice. A fridge that is not yet cold or producing ice during the delivery visit is not, by itself, proof of a defect.
What if the driver cannot wait for a full test?
Prioritize the checks that can be done quickly: visible condition, model and item match, and written notice of any damage or shortage. Keep photos and contact the seller promptly to ask what steps are permitted next. Do not assume that writing “subject to inspection” preserves a claim unless the seller confirms that in its policy or in writing.
Should you sign for an appliance with damage?
Tell the delivery agent and ask the seller what it offers before deciding whether to accept or refuse the delivery. If you proceed, describe the specific issue accurately in the delivery record, keep a copy of anything you sign, and do not sign a form that incorrectly says no issue was observed if you can have it corrected. A signature’s legal effect and the available remedies are not established by one nationwide rule; seller terms and jurisdiction matter. For a specific dispute, check the order terms and contact an appropriate consumer-protection office. The FTC’s guidance on resolving business problems explains how to document a complaint and pursue a resolution.
How should you handle a problem discovered after delivery?
Contact the seller or delivery contact promptly. State what happened, when you noticed it, and what resolution you want. Save the order confirmation, receipt, signed delivery paperwork, warranty, photos, and messages; keep notes and copies of every conversation. The FTC recommends checking return terms and deadlines and collecting purchase records. Its warranty guidance also explains the value of keeping receipts and contacting the seller or manufacturer.

Check your order’s reporting deadline
There is no single deadline that applies to every seller. For example, Samsung describes different post-signature reporting periods depending on whether the order involved delivery or installation, while Walmart’s major-appliance preparation page gives a 48-hour period for issues found after acceptance. These are examples of company policies, not a nationwide rule. Check Samsung’s policy or Walmart’s delivery guidance as applicable, then verify the terms attached to your own order.
