The test behind this headline was a January 30, 2024 parabolic-flight evaluation of a Collins Aerospace prototype intended for NASA spacewalks aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The aircraft briefly simulated weightlessness so astronauts could assess fit, function and interfaces. It was a development milestone—not flight certification or proof the suit was ready for operational spacewalks. NASA later removed Collins’s xEVAS task orders in 2024; an April 2026 NASA inspector general account said NASA remained reliant on Axiom Space for both lunar and microgravity suits.
What happened during the test?
Former NASA astronauts John “Danny” Olivas and Dan Burbank reportedly wore the Collins suit on a Zero Gravity aircraft on January 30, 2024. During the brief weightless periods created by the aircraft’s parabolic flight, they carried out test objectives involving the pressure garment, tools and interfaces used on the ISS, and comparisons with NASA’s current Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU). A secondary report put the flight at 40 parabolas; that count is reported, not an independently confirmed NASA result. Reporting on the flight
A parabolic flight gives engineers a chance to see how people and equipment behave during short periods of simulated microgravity. It cannot by itself demonstrate how a suit performs during a sustained orbital spacewalk. The available account does not state a numerical score or formal acceptance threshold for this evaluation, so “passed” should be understood as a headline description of a test milestone, not a published certification decision.
What the test did—and did not—establish
- It offered a human-use evaluation: astronauts could assess fit, functionality and interaction with relevant tools and interfaces in brief weightlessness.
- It was not an operational demonstration: the flight did not establish sustained orbital performance, readiness for an ISS spacewalk or flight certification.
- It had no reported pass score: the available account gives no formal pass criterion or quantitative result.
What changed in the Collins program?
In 2024, NASA and Collins Aerospace agreed to remove Collins’s xEVAS task orders after the company could not meet NASA’s schedule for an ISS demonstration. The January flight therefore should not be read as a step that led directly to the suit entering service.

In an April 20, 2026 summary, NASA’s Office of Inspector General said NASA remained reliant on Axiom Space to deliver both lunar and microgravity suits. The OIG described NASA’s original plans for demonstrations in 2025 and 2026 as unrealistic. It said Axiom was planning demonstration readiness in late 2027, while an OIG scenario using historical testing averages extended to 2031. These are dated schedule assessments, not confirmation that demonstrations have taken place. NASA OIG’s April 2026 account
How the Collins station suit differs from Axiom’s lunar suit
Collins’s prototype was intended for NASA’s ISS and other microgravity needs. Axiom’s AxEMU is a separate suit for the Artemis III lunar mission. The providers, environments and milestones are different, so progress on one suit does not establish progress on the other.

| Suit effort | Provider and intended use | Relevant milestone and status |
|---|---|---|
| Collins prototype | Collins Aerospace; intended for NASA ISS spacewalks and microgravity work. | Parabolic-flight evaluation reported in January 2024. NASA and Collins removed the xEVAS task orders in 2024 after Collins could not meet the ISS demonstration schedule. |
| AxEMU | Axiom Space; designed for lunar use on Artemis III. | NASA reported in February 2026 that AxEMU had passed an Axiom contractor-led technical review. NASA’s own critical design sync review was a separate evaluation. NASA also described underwater and simulated lunar-gravity work and more than 850 hours of pressurized testing with a person inside. These milestones concern AxEMU, not the Collins prototype. NASA’s February 2026 AxEMU update |
Why NASA is developing new spacesuits
NASA says the current ISS EMU design debuted during the Space Shuttle Program in the 1980s. The agency has contracted commercial providers to develop next-generation suits for low Earth orbit spacewalks. That history explains the modernization effort, but the age of the existing design does not prove that any particular prototype has completed validation. NASA’s spacesuit overview
