Why the FPS Boost option may be missing
The game is not supported
FPS Boost is limited to selected backward-compatible games on Xbox Series X|S. Xbox says compatibility options may be unavailable for games that do not support FPS Boost or Auto HDR. A different game in the same franchise being supported does not establish that this one is. Xbox’s Games Featuring FPS Boost page is the place to check current eligibility; its list can change.
The title has a specific default setting
For a supported game, the setting may be available but not enabled. Xbox’s March 2021 announcement said FPS Boost was not enabled by default on Xbox Series X for Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. Those were title-specific examples, not a rule for every game. Xbox also advised players in that rollout to update and reboot the console.
How to check and enable FPS Boost
- Check the exact title. Find the game on Xbox’s current FPS Boost list. Confirm the game itself rather than assuming support based on its series or publisher.
- Open its compatibility settings. From the Xbox dashboard, highlight the game, press the Menu button, choose Manage game and add-ons, then open Compatibility options. Menu labels can vary with console software updates.
- Turn on FPS Boost if it is listed. Select the FPS Boost option. If Compatibility options or the FPS Boost control is absent, that alone does not indicate a console fault; the game may not support the feature.
- Restart the game. Close and relaunch it so the selected compatibility setting takes effect.
- Check the Guide indicator. With the game running, press the Xbox button and look in the Guide overlay beneath the clock for the FPS Boost status indicator.
If FPS Boost still does not appear
- Recheck eligibility and edition. Verify the exact game and edition against Xbox’s current list. Do not infer that an unlisted version or edition is supported.
- Update and reboot when applicable. Xbox specifically recommended updating and rebooting for the March 2021 Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 rollout. That guidance does not mean an update will add FPS Boost to a game that is not supported.
- Consult current Xbox support for the title or console. If the game is listed but the compatibility setting remains missing after checking its management menu, Xbox support is the appropriate next stop; the available guidance does not establish additional device-specific fixes.
What FPS Boost changes
Xbox described FPS Boost as using techniques that could nearly double the original frame rate on selected titles, and in a few instances quadruple it. Those are potential effects, not a guaranteed result for every supported game. Xbox also noted that some implementations reduced resolution to maintain smooth operation, so a performance tradeoff can vary by title.

A display or cable upgrade is not a fix for a missing FPS Boost menu option: first establish that the title is eligible and check its compatibility settings. Having an Xbox Series X|S is necessary for the feature, but compatible hardware does not make an unsupported game eligible.
