There is no defensible single “Tesla vs. BYD” market-share winner for 2025 in the figures cited here: BYD’s reported passenger-vehicle sales include both battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), while the cited Tesla filing reports an annual delivery decline but does not provide a matching BEV total in the cited passage. A fair comparison must match the time period, geography, vehicle type, sales basis and denominator.
What the 2025 sales figures actually say
BYD reported 4,602,436 new-energy-vehicle sales in 2025, but that headline total is broader than BEVs alone. Its passenger-vehicle figures split into 2,256,714 battery-electric vehicles and 2,288,709 plug-in hybrids. BYD marked the figures unaudited in its December 2025 sales announcement.
Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K says cash deliveries decreased approximately 8% year over year. Automotive sales revenue fell 9%, with lower average selling prices also contributing. Those percentages describe changes, not Tesla’s unit sales total or its share of the EV market.
Consequently, these figures do not establish an exact, like-for-like 2025 global market-share comparison. The BYD announcement separates BYD passenger BEVs and PHEVs; the cited Tesla filing does not provide a corresponding full-year BEV count in the passage at issue.

Why “electric vehicle sales” can mean different things
BEVs versus BEVs plus PHEVs
A BEV runs on electricity stored in a battery and has no combustion engine. A PHEV has a battery that can be charged externally as well as a combustion engine. Some reports count only BEVs; others combine BEVs and PHEVs under an electric-car or EV label.
The International Energy Agency’s global electric-car totals include both BEVs and PHEVs. The distinction is especially consequential for BYD: its 2025 passenger-vehicle sales were split almost evenly between the two powertrains. Comparing BYD’s combined total with a Tesla BEV figure would make the scopes unequal.

Sales, deliveries and registrations
Automakers’ reported sales or deliveries, wholesale shipments and government vehicle registrations are not interchangeable. They can differ in timing, geography and the point at which a vehicle is counted. A comparison should use the same basis for both companies, or label the difference clearly rather than combine figures as if they were directly equivalent.
How to compare Tesla and BYD market share
Market share is a ratio, so the numerator and denominator must describe the same period, geography and vehicle scope.

- Set the period. Choose the same calendar year, quarter or other interval for both automakers. Mark provisional data and revisions when relevant.
- Set the geography. Decide whether the comparison is global, China-only, Europe or a particular country. A global sales count cannot be compared directly with a national market-share percentage.
- Set the vehicle scope. Decide whether the comparison is BEV-only or includes PHEVs. State the choice in the heading, table or sentence.
- Set the sales basis. Use deliveries, sales, wholesales or registrations consistently. If the sources use different bases, disclose that and avoid treating the resulting percentages as a clean comparison.
- Name the denominator. A company’s BEV share is its BEV sales divided by all brands’ BEV sales in the same market and period. Its share of electric cars including PHEVs uses a broader total; its share of all new cars uses an even broader denominator.
- Keep model and company shares separate. A model’s share of BEV sales is not its manufacturer’s share of all EV sales.
For example, “BYD had 26% of China’s domestic EV sales” is incomplete unless its scope is clear. The ICCT’s 2026 monitor of 2025 data gives BYD a 26% share of domestic EV sales in China and says PHEVs made up 54% of BYD’s domestic EV sales. That is a country-specific, EV-scoped statistic—not a global share or a share of all cars.
What the 2025 global market context tells you
The IEA reported that global electric-car sales exceeded 20 million in 2025, grew 20% and represented 25% of all new-car sales. In this measure, electric cars include both BEVs and PHEVs. The IEA’s Global Energy Review gives a rounded total of 21 million, or roughly one in four new cars sold. These are rounded global market totals, not Tesla’s or BYD’s individual shares.

Geography changes the picture. In 2025, electric cars accounted for nearly 55% of all car sales in China, according to the IEA. That is an adoption share for the national market, not BYD’s or Tesla’s share of sales.
Older figures also need their original scope. The IEA attributed about 15% of all car sales in China to BYD in 2024. That uses the all-car denominator and an earlier year; it is not directly comparable to the ICCT’s 2025 figure for BYD’s share of China’s EV sales.
Model popularity is not automaker market share
The IEA says the Tesla Model Y represented nearly 8% of global BEV sales in 2025; the Model 3 accounted for 3.6%, and the BYD Seagull for 3.0%. Together, the five top-selling models represented about 20% of global BEV sales.
These are model-level fractions of global BEV sales. They do not show how much of the market each automaker captured across all its models, and they exclude PHEVs from the BEV denominator. Use them to discuss model popularity, not as a substitute for Tesla-versus-BYD company market share.
