Compare appliance-store ratings by checking who produced them, when the data was collected, who was surveyed, and what the score measures. Then read written reviews for repeated, specific experiences—especially in the parts of the purchase that matter to you, such as delivery or installation. A star average or an undated ranking, on its own, is not enough to tell you which store is the better fit.

Start by identifying what each rating represents

Before comparing numbers, label the type of evidence in front of you. A satisfaction study, an open review-site star average, and an installation-specific rating may describe different populations and experiences. They are not automatically interchangeable, and there is no reliable conversion that makes their scores directly comparable.

  • Source: Who collected or published the result?
  • Date: When was the survey conducted or the review period covered? If a result is tied to a study year, keep that year attached to it.
  • Population and sample: Who was eligible to respond, how recent was their purchase, and how many responses were included?
  • Method: How were respondents recruited, screened, and asked to rate their experience?
  • Measures: Which parts of the shopping and fulfillment experience were scored, and are factor weights explained?
  • Coverage: What geography and retailers does the result cover?

J.D. Power describes its studies as using independently collected consumer feedback, study-specific sample design, respondent checks, and analysis of customer feedback. Those are useful questions to ask of any published rating, but they do not establish that other review platforms use the same safeguards. J.D. Power’s methodology overview explains its own approach.

Check the study year, sample, and factors

A score only makes sense in the context of the edition that produced it. J.D. Power’s 2023 U.S. Appliance Satisfaction Study release reports retailer results for that named study year; it should be described as a 2023 result, not as today’s ranking. See the 2023 study release.

Study factors can also change. A J.D. Power Appliance Retailer Satisfaction Study brochure describes six factors for its edition: sales staff and service, store facility, price, delivery and installation service, sales and promotions, and merchandise. It says the study was based on approximately 2,000 customers who bought an appliance at a major home appliance retailer in the prior 12 months. That sample figure and factor list belong to the brochure’s edition; they are not confirmed current methodology. Read the brochure.

The 2015 J.D. Power appliance retailer study release listed seven factors, treating delivery service and installation service separately. This illustrates why you should not assume that scores from different years measure the same thing. See the 2015 release.

Rank #2

For any study, look for the current edition’s own sample and factor definitions. Do not carry a sample size or methodology from an older brochure forward unless a current source confirms it.

Compare the experiences that matter to your purchase

Use the rating dimensions to match evidence to your plans rather than treating every factor as equally important. A buyer relying on the retailer for delivery and installation has a different priority from someone collecting an appliance and arranging service independently. This is a practical way to use the dimensions—not a weighting prescribed by the cited J.D. Power materials.

Purchase concern What to look for
Help choosing an appliance Comments about staff knowledge, responsiveness, and sales service.
Cost and offers Experiences with quoted prices, advertised promotions, and how offers were handled.
Delivery and installation Comments about delivery service and installation; check whether the rating combines or separates them.
Product and in-store experience Feedback about merchandise and, where rated, the store facility.
Online or store experience Use only dimensions the source actually reports; do not infer an online experience from a store-focused score.

When sources use different scales or categories, compare their descriptions and recurring issues rather than ranking their raw numbers side by side. If factor weights are available, note them; if they are not, do not assume each dimension contributes equally to an overall score.

Use written reviews as clues, not a representative survey

Read comments for recurring, concrete details that align with the service dimensions you care about. Several specific accounts of the same delivery or installation problem may warrant closer attention. A collection of comments, however, is not necessarily representative of all customers: unless the platform explains how reviews are sampled, verified, moderated, or whether submissions are incentivized, the comments alone cannot establish those practices.

  1. Scan recent comments, noting their dates and whether they describe a completed purchase.
  2. Group specific comments by theme, such as sales assistance, price or promotion, delivery, installation, merchandise, or store experience.
  3. Distinguish first-hand details from vague praise or complaints that do not explain what happened.
  4. Check whether a theme appears across multiple comments and whether it concerns a service you will use.
  5. Keep the platform’s review total and star average separate from a controlled satisfaction study unless their methods are shown to be comparable.

Interpret close scores cautiously

A small difference between two scores may not indicate a meaningful difference in customer experience. That judgment depends on comparable methods, sample sizes, and uncertainty estimates; the cited sources do not establish a universal cutoff for deciding when two scores differ meaningfully. If those details are missing, report the scores as published and avoid claiming that one store definitively outperforms another on the basis of a narrow gap.

A concise comparison note can keep the evidence straight: record the source and study or review date, the sample or review population if disclosed, the experience measured, and the limitations. Then state which dimensions matter most for your purchase and what recurring written-review themes you found.
