Tinder’s Face Check rollout in the United States is regional, not a confirmed nationwide requirement. Match Group’s October 22, 2025 announcement said new users in California would have to complete the scan, with more states planned; Tinder’s public help pages do not provide a current, complete list of US states where it is required. If Tinder prompts you to complete it, that in-app requirement applies to your account and region.
Where is Tinder Face Check required in the US?
Match Group announced on October 22, 2025, that Face Check would be required for new Tinder users in California and in seven countries, and said it planned to expand to additional US states. That announcement did not make the feature mandatory nationwide. Tinder’s later public documentation describes regional availability but does not publish a complete current US state-by-state list. The company’s August 2026 age-check page names Australia, Brazil, and the UK for Face Check age checks without listing US states, so it does not resolve the current US coverage question. For your own account, use the Face Check prompt in Tinder or check Tinder Help for your region. A prompt means Tinder is requiring the process for you; the older California rollout announcement is not a reliable map of current state coverage.
What does Face Check do?
Face Check is an in-app video selfie process. Tinder says facial scanning checks that the video shows a live person rather than a digitally altered or manipulated recording, then compares the face in the video with photos on the profile. Tinder also creates a FaceVector from facial geometry to compare across accounts, which the company says can help identify multiple accounts using the same likeness.

When the comparison succeeds with a clear, solo profile photo, Tinder awards a Photo Verified badge. The badge is evidence that Tinder performed its photo-verification process and liveness checks; it does not establish a person’s legal identity, character, or safety.
What happens if Tinder requires a scan?
Tinder says users presented with a mandatory age check cannot fully use the service until completing it: likes and messages are unavailable, and the profile is hidden while the check is incomplete. The exact screens and verification steps can differ by region, so follow the instructions shown in the app rather than assuming every user sees the same flow.

Tinder says Face Check works on iOS, Android, and tinder.com. Its basic capture guidance is to keep your face clearly visible and record in bright conditions. The feature is a software flow; Tinder does not identify special hardware as a requirement.
How Face Check differs from other Tinder checks
Tinder has separate verification and age-assurance processes. They serve different purposes and are not interchangeable everywhere.

What Face Check data does Tinder keep?
Tinder’s policy says the original selfie video is assessed and promptly deleted, but two audit images are retained. It says FaceMaps and FaceVectors are kept for the lifetime of the account and generally deleted within 30 days after account closure, except when retention is needed for a legal obligation or service or user safety. Audit images, age estimates, and verification results are kept until 90 days after account closure, or one year if the account is banned.

Tinder also says that people who live where Face Check is required cannot delete Verification Data without deleting their account. The policy says Verification Data may be shared with service providers operating or troubleshooting Face Check and, where applicable law allows, with Match Group affiliates for safety purposes. For US residents, Tinder says it does not “sell” or “share” Verification Data as those terms are defined by applicable state privacy laws. Tinder says the legal basis for processing varies by jurisdiction; in some places it relies on a basis other than consent. In November 2025 prepared remarks, Match Group reported a 60% reduction in user views of profiles later identified as bad actors and a 40% decrease in reports of bad-actor activity. The company said the profile-view figure came from a random weighted sample of in-app profile views and defined bad actors to include accounts involved in deceptive or harmful behavior, such as spam, scam attempts, or automated fake profiles. These are company-reported early results, not an independent evaluation. Match Group’s November 2025 prepared remarks give the more specific figures and measurement description.

Match Group’s 2025 annual report says Face Check is helping reduce interactions with bad actors and improve perceptions of trust and safety, but it does not provide an independent audit establishing causation. The figures do not show that fake profiles have been eliminated or that every profile with a verification badge is safe. See the company’s 2025 annual report.
