The TP-Link Tapo Doorbell Pro D260 can record locally to a separately purchased microSD card without requiring Tapo Care. Its main trade-off is power: battery operation is simpler, while hardwiring is required for 24/7 recording and pre-roll. TP-Link lists 4K video, a 180° diagonal field of view, multiple detection features and optional cloud history; those are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent test results.
What the Tapo Doorbell Pro D260 includes
The D260 is a video doorbell that can run on its rechargeable battery or be hardwired. TP-Link’s US product page lists a $219.99 MSRP, but that is not a guarantee of today’s retail price or availability. The page also showed a launch coupon with dates that have elapsed, so do not treat that promotion as current. Check TP-Link’s D260 product page for current product details.
TP-Link lists the doorbell, mounting bracket and wedges, mounting materials, USB-C cable, extension wires, jumper for an existing chime, wire nuts and quick installation guide in the US box contents. A microSD card is not included.
How good are the D260’s video specifications?
TP-Link specifies a maximum resolution of 4K, a maximum frame rate of 15 fps and a 180° diagonal field of view. The product materials also list HDR, 3D noise reduction and lens distortion correction. These figures describe the manufacturer’s specifications; they do not establish how clear footage will look in a particular doorway, lighting condition or network setup. TP-Link D260 specifications and the D260 datasheet provide the published details.

For nighttime visibility, TP-Link lists infrared vision up to 30 ft / 10 m and full-color night vision with built-in spotlights or white lights. Actual visibility will depend on the placement and conditions around the entrance; the published specifications are not independent image-quality measurements.
Do you need a subscription to record video?
No. TP-Link says the D260 can record to a microSD card locally without a Tapo Care subscription. The doorbell supports cards up to 512 GB, but the card is a separate purchase. Tapo Care is optional and subscription-based; TP-Link lists up to 30 days of cloud video history with the service. Local recording therefore avoids a required cloud-storage fee, but it does not make the complete setup cost-free.

It sends real-time notifications directly to your device indicating person/vehicle/package detection, with the ability to select one, all, or no detection notifications.
TP-Link also describes person, animal, vehicle and package detection as available at no extra cost. That is a statement about the manufacturer’s feature and pricing policy, not a verified claim about detection accuracy. See TP-Link’s storage and feature details.
Battery or hardwired: which setup fits?
Choose battery operation if avoiding a wired installation matters more than continuous capture. TP-Link estimates up to 180 days of battery life in its laboratory test using 300 seconds of daily use; under its stated 360-seconds-per-day condition, the estimate falls to 140 days. TP-Link cautions that actual battery life may vary, so these estimates should not be read as a guaranteed interval between charges.

Hardwiring is required for 24/7 continuous recording and pre-roll, according to TP-Link. Its product page also says a traditional existing chime must be bypassed for that mode. That requirement matters if your priority is capturing activity continuously rather than relying on battery operation.

The product materials list motion, person, animal, vehicle, package and facial detection, plus activity zones. TP-Link says facial profiles are processed on the doorbell by default and that recognition can be turned off. Its US product page says facial recognition is unavailable in Illinois and Texas; regional availability and applicable rules may differ.

Who should consider the D260?
- It may suit you if you want local video recording without a mandatory cloud subscription, are comfortable buying a microSD card separately, and value the listed detection and smart-home features.
- Compare alternatives or setups if you need 24/7 recording but cannot hardwire the doorbell, want cloud history without a recurring subscription, or depend on facial recognition in Illinois or Texas.
- Verify before buying if your decision depends on real-world image quality, alert accuracy, current retail pricing, stock or region-specific integrations. The manufacturer specifications do not settle those questions.
