The same release bundled media-player, subtitle, browser, sorting, and bug-fix changes. These details describe the service and device in 2011, not their current availability.
What the update added to VUDU
VUDU rentals were the headline feature of the Boxee Box update. Boxee’s announcement said HDX movies could play at 1080p and 24 frames per second, with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio. Engadget reproduced the January 19, 2011 announcement; HotHardware’s January 21 report also described the HDX capabilities.
This was a historical service launch, not evidence that VUDU remains usable on a Boxee Box today. HotHardware reported that Boxee Box VUDU access was available only in the United States at the time.
How VUDU differed across Boxee platforms
The original offering was not identical across Boxee products. TechCrunch’s October 2010 account distinguished standard-definition rentals on the computer version of Boxee software from the planned full-HD/HDX library on the Boxee Box.

How the 2011 update was delivered
Boxee said the update would arrive automatically within 24 hours, or users could check manually under Settings > System > Update. The announcement also noted that an earlier release attempt had been withdrawn after reports of critical bugs. Boxee CEO Avner Ronen’s statement, reproduced in the announcement, was: “We have released a new version of the Boxee Box firmware.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the historical reports do—and do not—establish
The January 2011 sources document the update, its advertised video and audio specifications, and the US-only VUDU availability reported at that time. They do not establish whether VUDU still runs on the Boxee Box, whether firmware updates can still be obtained, or whether the device is currently sold new. The announced 1080p capability should therefore be understood as a specification of the original offering, not a guarantee of present-day playback or access.
