For most GT7 players who already own a controller, it is the simplest place to start. Choose a supported racing wheel if you want the physical steering and pedal experience and are willing to take on the extra hardware, setup and space. Official Gran Turismo updates confirm support for both approaches, but do not establish that a wheel or controller is universally faster.

How to choose between a wheel and a controller

Factor Controller Racing wheel
Input style Steer with the controller’s sticks or directional buttons; use the controls you already know. Steer with a physical wheel and operate pedals. GT7 provides settings for supported steering-wheel controllers and pedal calibration.
Cost and equipment A practical default if you already own a compatible controller; no wheel purchase is required. Requires a compatible wheel, and potentially pedals or other setup equipment. Current prices and bundle contents vary and are not established here.
Setup and space Minimal setup and easy to use in a typical controller-playing space. Requires more setup and somewhere to place or mount the wheel and pedals.
Best fit Players who value convenience, already own a controller, or do not want a dedicated driving setup. Players who specifically want physical steering and pedal inputs and accept the added equipment and setup.

These are practical decision criteria, not results from a head-to-head test. The official material cited below documents game support and updates; it does not demonstrate finer control, better race results, or faster lap times for either input method.

What GT7 supports

GT7 has settings for steering-wheel controllers as well as ongoing adjustments to wireless-controller steering. In its Update 1.17 notice, published June 23, 2022, Polyphony Digital added a Controllers-menu option called Steering Controller Settings. The notice says players can check connected steering-wheel controllers and adjust input values, and use Pedal Calibration to adjust pedal sensitivity.

Compatibility is model-specific and has expanded through updates. Polyphony Digital’s Update 1.15 notice named the Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro in force-feedback notes. The Update 1.46 notice, published April 25, 2024, added Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Extreme support; the Update 1.57 notice, published March 27, 2025, added Thrustmaster T598 support. These announcements are not a complete guarantee that every wheel works with every console setup: check the exact model, console generation and current game version before buying.

What the updates say about handling and force feedback

GT7’s input behavior has been adjusted over time, but update notes do not compare wheel and controller performance. The Update 1.31 notice, published March 30, 2023, says Polyphony Digital adjusted steering behavior when using wireless-controller sticks or directional buttons and also adjusted the force-feedback algorithm. The notice confirms changes to both input experiences, not that one is superior.

Force-feedback settings deserve care. Polyphony Digital’s Update 1.15 notice warned that very high Max. Torque or Sensitivity values could cause violent vibration on several listed wheels. A separate May 27, 2022 notice said force feedback and torque were temporarily reduced for the Thrustmaster T-GT, Fanatec Podium and Fanatec GT DD Pro. Those are historical, model- and version-specific notes, not a current universal settings recipe. Follow the current in-game guidance for your wheel and avoid assuming old recommendations still apply.

Which should you use?

Use a controller if convenience is your priority

  • You already own a controller and want to play without buying or arranging additional hardware.
  • You prefer a quick, compact setup.
  • You are not specifically seeking physical steering and pedals.

Consider a wheel if you want physical driving inputs

  • You want to steer with a wheel and operate pedals rather than use controller controls.
  • You are comfortable checking exact GT7 and console compatibility before choosing a model.
  • You have room for the wheel and pedals and are willing to spend time setting them up and calibrating them.

A Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro is one example of a named wheel in Polyphony Digital’s GT7 update notes, not a required purchase or a guaranteed performance upgrade. Verify current console compatibility, bundle contents, availability and price before buying.

What to know about the announced MOZA wheel

On July 28, 2026, Polyphony Digital announced MOZA as an official Gran Turismo World Series peripheral partner and said the companies are developing a Gran Turismo-branded steering-wheel controller with native GT7 support. The announcement gives no retail release date, so it is a future product development rather than a confirmed available purchase. Gran Turismo Series Producer Kazunori Yamauchi said the partnership could expand possibilities for developing a wheel suited to Gran Turismo; the statement does not establish a release schedule or performance advantage.
