Define the success and failure behavior in your OpenAPI description, then run a mock server against it. Prism can serve the documented endpoints, validate incoming requests, and return response examples or schema-generated values. For cases that need hand-picked request matching and canned responses, WireMock offers a different approach. Whichever you use, make page links lead to routes the mock actually serves, and treat mock success as a client-contract check—not proof that production authorization works.
Define the behavior your client must handle
Start with the OpenAPI description, not the mock tool. For each operation, specify its parameters, security requirements, success responses, and the failure responses client code must handle. Include response schemas and representative examples for meaningful status codes, especially errors that drive distinct client behavior.
Prism uses the API description to expose endpoints and validate requests. It can select a documented response example or generate values from schemas. Response negotiation matters: validation or security failures can affect which response Prism returns, so define the intended response codes and test the status your client expects.
Model optional and alternative authentication accurately
OpenAPI security requirements have a useful distinction. Separate Security Requirement Objects in the list are alternatives; every scheme listed inside one object must be satisfied. An empty object means anonymous access is supported. As the OpenAPI Specification v3.0.4 puts it: “An empty Security Requirement Object ({}) indicates anonymous access is supported.” OpenAPI Specification v3.0.4

Use these rules to represent optional authentication, alternative ways to authenticate, or operations that require multiple credentials. Document the expected unauthorized response as part of the operation’s contract.
Test authentication success and failure
Declare the API’s security scheme and operation-level security requirements, then exercise both an authenticated request and one with credentials missing or invalid. Verify the status and body the client is supposed to handle. Prism validates requests against the declared security rules and may take a security-related response path when credentials do not match. A mock’s acceptance of a credential does not prove that a production identity provider or application authorization policy is correct. It checks the request against the mock’s declared contract and reproduces documented behavior; it does not independently exercise production identity or access-control systems.
Make error cases deliberate and testable
Associate each error example with its intended response code. Include only cases that belong to the API contract—for example, validation failures, missing or invalid authentication, a missing resource, or a server failure. Do not assume every API uses the same error schema.

With Prism, define the responses and examples in OpenAPI, then account for response negotiation when requests violate validation or security rules. If you need to force an exact status and body for a scenario, WireMock can match a request and return a configured stub response. Keep that stub aligned with the contract, or clearly identify the test as intentionally out of contract.
Make pagination links work inside the mock
Describe the page-selecting query or path parameters and the page response schema. Create stable examples for at least a first page and a subsequent page, with a cursor or continuation URL that resolves to an operation the mock serves. Test the client’s actual pagination loop, including what happens when there is no next page.

Check continuation values rather than assuming they are usable. Twilio’s Prism example warns that next_page_uri may be http://example.com; a client that follows it can leave the mock and receive a 404 instead of reaching the next page. The exact continuation format is API-specific, so make it point to a working mock route or provide a cursor the next request can use.
Choose Prism or WireMock based on how you author behavior

Choose Prism when the OpenAPI description should drive responses and request validation. Choose WireMock when tests need fine-grained request matching or deliberately authored canned behavior. Also consider how much state or distinct page data tests require, and whether your team needs a shared hosted environment. These tools differ in how behavior is authored and validated; they are not interchangeable by default.

Run the mock and verify the client flow
- Define the contract. In the OpenAPI document, specify security, parameters, success responses, and the failure responses client code needs to handle.
- Add status-specific examples. Include distinct authentication and other error examples, associated with their intended response codes.
- Start Prism. The documented commands are
prism mock api.oas3.yamlfor static generation andprism mock -d api.oas3.yamlfor dynamic generation. Prism also documents using thePreferheader to select dynamic behavior for an individual call while the server is in static mode. Check the flags against the installed Prism version because CLI documentation can change. Prism mock guide - Exercise representative requests. Send requests with and without credentials, select each important error case, and request successive pages. Assert the status, relevant headers, and body shape, then verify that continuation data reaches the next mocked request and that the terminal page ends the loop.
- Add a WireMock stub when needed. Match the relevant method, URL, query parameters, headers, authentication, cookies, or body, and configure the response status and body. WireMock documentation WireMock stubbing
- Interpret the result narrowly. A passing client test checks behavior against the mock’s contract and examples. It does not establish that a live service, identity provider, or data store has been tested.
