A computer can display a drive’s claimed capacity even when the hardware cannot store that much. A 2023 teardown documented one device advertised as a 16TB SSD that actually contained a 64GB microSD card.
Why a $100 “16TB SSD” deserves scrutiny
The price claim is extraordinary for a device advertised to hold 16TB of data. But the strongest evidence here is a specific historical teardown, not a current audit of Amazon listings: on January 17, 2023, Tom’s Hardware reported on a device advertised as a “16TB USB 3.1 M.2 SSD.” A teardown by Review Geek, as recounted by Tom’s Hardware, found a 64GB microSD card inside, installed on a board that acted as a USB adapter. The report does not prove every inexpensive SSD listing is fraudulent, or that the same listings are still available today.
Digital Trends’ January 19, 2023 coverage also reported that a computer showed the claimed capacity. That illustrates the central risk: the number displayed by an operating system is not, by itself, proof of how much data the physical storage can reliably hold. Tom’s Hardware’s report and Digital Trends’ coverage describe the incident.
How false capacity can fool your computer
A storage device reports information about itself to the computer, including a capacity. In a counterfeit device, that reported figure can be manipulated to show far more space than the hardware actually has. The operating system may therefore show “16TB” even though the physical storage is much smaller.

#1 Best Overall
- NO WALL WARTS: Work freely with its BUS-POWERED USB-C. No wall outlet required. 15 watt USB powered output required from connected device.
- Big on space: High-capacity storage to store all your files in one place.
- Reliable backup: Safeguard assignments, projects, or sensitive files with trusted performance.
- Fuss-free, clutter-free: One port, one cord, quick connect.
- Peace-of-mind: Comes with two-year limited warranty and Rescue Data Recovery Services.
The problem often becomes apparent only when data is written. Once the actual storage is full, additional writes may fail, overwrite earlier data, or produce files that cannot be read back correctly. That is why a capacity label or a successful-looking file copy is not enough to establish usable capacity; test data must be written and verified.
Warning signs to weigh before buying
- Implausibly low price: A 16TB portable SSD offered for around $100 merits skepticism. The cited reports do not establish a universal price threshold, so treat the price as a reason to investigate rather than proof of fraud.
- Generic or repeated product photos: In its 2023 coverage, Tom’s Hardware identified generic product imagery among signs that warrant caution.
- Obscure seller identity: Check who actually sells the item and whether the manufacturer and seller can be identified. An unfamiliar name is a risk signal, not a verdict on its own.
- Reviews that do not match the item: Reviews describing unrelated products can make a high rating or large review count misleading. Read the review content and variation details, not just the stars.
Tom’s Hardware quoted Amazon’s response to the teardown in January 2023: “We do not allow product listings to be taken over or incorrect information to be listed, and we have zero tolerance for fake reviews.” That is Amazon’s stated policy position, not evidence that fraudulent offers have been eliminated.

Why high ratings do not verify capacity
Star ratings and review counts report reviewers’ experiences; they do not measure the drive’s physical storage. A buyer may not have filled the device, tested every byte, or checked whether older files remained intact after more data was written. Reviews can also be unhelpful when they refer to a different product or variation.
Amazon announced that it would gradually roll out a change limiting shared reviews to product variations with minor differences that do not affect functionality. The scheduled rollout window was February 12 through May 31, 2026, according to Amazon’s seller announcement. Even if reviews are more tightly grouped by variation, a rating still cannot confirm that a particular drive can store its claimed capacity.

How to test a drive without risking existing files
Use a write-and-verify test on an empty drive. The test writes data and then reads it back to check whether the device can store what it claims. The F3 project documents two tools for this: f3write writes test files and f3read validates them. Its documentation describes the pair as an implementation of H2testw. See the F3 project documentation for tool details.
- Back up anything important. F3 warns that counterfeit devices may overwrite existing data. Do not run a capacity test on a drive containing files you cannot afford to lose.
- Use an empty drive. Move any needed files elsewhere, then confirm the test drive contains nothing you need. A test can use the drive’s available space.
- Run the write phase. Use
f3writeon the mounted drive to create test files. Follow the project’s documentation for your operating system and mount path. - Run the read-and-verify phase. Use
f3readon the same drive. It checks whether the test data can be read back and reports the result. - Act on failures cautiously. If verification reports errors or less usable capacity than claimed, stop using the device for important data. Preserve the test results and contact the seller or marketplace about a return or refund.
A capacity test can expose a mismatch, but it does not prove every aspect of a drive’s quality, speed, durability, or warranty support.

What to check when choosing storage instead
Compare storage offers using evidence beyond their headline capacity. For each candidate, check:
- Verified usable capacity: Look for a capacity that can be confirmed through a write-and-read test, not just a device label or listing.
- Interface and speed claims: Confirm what connection the drive uses and assess speed claims separately from capacity. The 2023 device was advertised as USB 3.1, but that label did not establish its storage capacity.
- Manufacturer and seller identity: Prefer offers where it is clear who makes and sells the device.
- Warranty and support: Check the stated coverage and how to contact the responsible company.
- Current price and availability: Compare offers available now rather than relying on old examples or a single eye-catching listing.
Tom’s Hardware named the Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q 16TB as a legitimate premium product in its 2023 coverage. That historical mention does not establish the model’s current status, availability, or price, so verify those details before considering it. It should not be treated as equivalent to a roughly $100 offer.
