Samsung says its PM9E1 PCIe Gen5 SSD is qualified for NVIDIA DGX Spark and is designed for AI PCs and high-performance desktop systems. Samsung lists peak sequential speeds of up to 14,500 MB/s read and 12,600 MB/s write, with M.2 22×42 and 22×80 variants and capacities up to 4TB. Those are manufacturer specifications—not guaranteed results or proof that the drive fits every PC.
What the PM9E1 is—and what “optimized for AI” means
The PM9E1 is a Samsung PCIe Gen5 NVMe PC SSD positioned for AI computing and high-performance desktop use. Samsung says its firmware is optimized for DGX Spark OS and CUDA, and that the drive is qualified for and in mass production for NVIDIA DGX Spark. That qualification is specific to DGX Spark; it does not establish compatibility with other computers. Samsung’s PM9E1 product page and technical overview describe the company’s positioning and features.
“AI-optimized” here describes Samsung’s product positioning, firmware work and platform qualification. The published information does not establish that the SSD independently accelerates AI models or improves model performance compared with another suitably supported drive.

| Peak sequential read | Up to 14,500 MB/s, a Samsung maximum specification; actual results vary with system configuration and conditions. |
| Peak sequential write | Up to 12,600 MB/s, a Samsung maximum specification; actual results vary with system configuration and conditions. |
| Form factors | M.2 22×42 and M.2 22×80 variants are described by Samsung. Check the exact product variant and host clearance. |
| Maximum capacity | Up to 4TB, according to Samsung. |
| DGX Spark qualification | Samsung says the PM9E1 is qualified for DGX Spark and is in mass production for the platform. |
| Security feature | Samsung says the controller supports SPDM 1.2 for device authentication, firmware attestation and secure channels; this is a manufacturer feature description, not independent validation. |
Samsung cautions that product specifications and performance data reflect internal test results and that actual performance depends on system configuration, use conditions and environment. The peak figures should therefore be treated as ceilings under particular conditions, not promised speeds in every workload. Samsung’s product page also describes up to 45% improved power efficiency versus the previous generation, based on the company’s internal evaluations.

What DGX Spark qualification does—and does not—tell you
NVIDIA describes DGX Spark as a desktop system for developing, fine-tuning and deploying AI models. Samsung’s qualification statement is useful evidence for that named platform, but it is not a blanket statement that every PM9E1 model will work in every PC or that all systems expose the same performance. For a different host, confirm support in that computer’s documentation rather than inferring it from DGX Spark qualification.
NVIDIA’s DGX Spark hardware overview, last updated September 10, 2026, lists a 240W external power supply and says 100W is available for other system components, including the SSD. That is a platform power allocation, not the PM9E1’s own power draw, and it does not establish a specific temperature or sustained-performance outcome.

Choosing between M.2 22×42 and 22×80
The 22×42 designation describes an M.2 drive 22 mm wide and 42 mm long; 22×80 is the longer M.2 format. Samsung’s CES 2026 interview identifies the compact 22×42 PM9E1 and quotes project leader ChangWoo Sun calling it “the world’s first AI-optimized PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSD in an ultra-compact form factor.” That “world’s first” description is Samsung’s characterization; the cited material does not independently verify the ranking. See the Samsung CES Innovation Awards 2026 interview.
Before selecting either size, check the host’s supported M.2 length, PCIe generation, physical clearance and cooling arrangements. A matching connector alone does not establish that a system supports a PCIe Gen5 drive or the specific capacity and variant you intend to use.

How to read Samsung’s performance and efficiency claims
Samsung’s technical blog compares a 4TB PM9E1 with a 2TB PM9A1a: it reports sequential write speeds of 12,600 MB/s and 5,100 MB/s respectively, and 1,448.3 versus 1,000 MB/s per watt. These are Samsung internal figures for drives of different capacities, not a matched-capacity independent benchmark. They provide context for Samsung’s claims but should not be used to predict results in a particular AI workload or computer.
The sources cited here do not establish independent lab results, retail pricing, warranty terms or broad consumer availability. Treat the PM9E1 specifications and comparisons as manufacturer claims, and compare actual system support and workload-specific testing where available.

What to check before buying or specifying a PM9E1
- Confirm the host supports PCIe Gen5 NVMe storage; do not assume DGX Spark qualification applies to another computer.
- Verify the exact M.2 length—22×42 or 22×80—and the host’s physical clearance.
- Check the offered capacity and exact PM9E1 variant against host documentation.
- For sustained or performance-sensitive work, assess cooling and look for workload tests performed on the same system under comparable conditions.
- Confirm the listing, price, seller, warranty and availability directly; the cited manufacturer information does not establish current retail terms.
