Apple said a rare bug fixed in iOS 17.5.1 could make some photos reappear in the Photos library after deletion. The company attributed the issue to database corruption; it did not publish the underlying technical sequence. Apple also reportedly clarified that the affected photos were stored on the device, not synced to iCloud Photos.

What happened in the iOS 17.5 photo bug?

Some users found photos in their iPhone Photos library that they believed they had deleted. Apple’s iOS 17.5.1 release notes described the problem this way: “This update provides important bug fixes and addresses a rare issue where photos that experienced database corruption could reappear in the Photos library even if they were deleted.” Apple Support’s iOS 17 update history lists the fix.

Apple called the issue rare, but did not publish an incidence rate. Its release note identifies database corruption as the issue associated with the resurfacing photos; it does not explain exactly how that corruption led to a photo appearing again.

Did iCloud Photos restore the deleted images?

According to 9to5Mac’s May 23, 2024 report of Apple’s clarification, the affected photos were local to the device and had not been synced to iCloud Photos. The report also said Apple stated it had not accessed users’ photos or videos. Those details came from Apple’s reported clarification, rather than the brief iOS 17.5.1 release note.

Did iOS 17.5.1 remove photos that had already returned?

No. The 9to5Mac report said the update addressed the bug but did not automatically delete photos that had already resurfaced. Affected users needed to remove those images manually in Photos.

What should iPhone users do now?

  1. Check for an update available to your device. Open Settings > General > Software Update and follow the instructions shown there. Do not treat iOS 17.5.1 as the current recommendation: it was the 2024 release that addressed this specific bug, and availability depends on the device and current Apple releases. Apple’s iOS 18 update history provides later release-history context, but a release-history page alone does not establish which version is currently available for a particular iPhone.
  2. Delete any resurfaced photo yourself. In Photos, select the image and delete it if you do not want it in the library. The reported fix did not remove already-returned images automatically.
  3. Use Apple’s current support guidance if you need help. Follow the instructions applicable to your iPhone and software version rather than assuming a 2024 fix is the right update path today.
