How do I fact-check an AI answer?
Use this workflow before you quote, share, publish, or act on an AI-generated answer. The House of Commons Library puts the central principle simply: “AI should be treated as an assistant, not an authority.”
- Decide what is at stake. If the answer could affect health, safety, money, legal rights, employment, or another important decision, set a higher standard of verification and plan for review by a qualified person. AI cannot replace professional judgment or subject expertise, as the House of Commons Library explains.
- Separate the answer into claims. Check factual statements one at a time. Mark names, dates, statistics, quotations, legal or policy references, and claims attributed to organizations or studies. A paragraph can mix accurate, inaccurate, and unsupported statements.
- Open every cited source. Confirm the link works and leads to a real, relevant document. Then check whether that document supports the exact claim, not merely a nearby topic. AI can invent citations, misrepresent a real source, or point to information that has gone stale. The Province of British Columbia’s review guidance also recommends checking citations and links.
- Trace important claims to strong evidence. Prefer original documents and datasets, official statistics, government or organizational sources, primary legislation, regulators, peer-reviewed research, or a knowledgeable expert. Secondary reporting can help with context or point you toward evidence, but trace consequential claims back to the underlying source where possible.
- Check date and context. Note when the source was published or updated. Check whether the claim may have changed, and whether any figure or statement refers to the right time period, population, geography, and definitions. Compare claims within the AI answer for contradictions.
- Look for independent confirmation when it matters. A second source helps when it has relevant evidence and is genuinely independent. Several pages repeating the same unsupported statement do not make it established fact.
- Fix, qualify, or remove unsupported claims. If sources do not support the wording, revise it to reflect what they establish or leave it out. Do not treat another AI response reassuring you as evidence.
- Review what you will use. Check for missing context, bias, internal inconsistencies, and private or confidential information. Edit the final material and take responsibility for it.
How can I tell whether an AI citation supports the claim?
Evaluate the source and the claim together. A link is not proof: the document must exist, be suitable for the subject and context, and support the statement as written. For each citation, ask:
- Is it authentic? Does the link open the named source, rather than an unrelated page or an error?
- Is it authoritative for this claim? An official agency may be authoritative about its own policy; a primary study may be more useful for a research finding.
- Does it say what the answer says? Check the relevant passage, table, or underlying data. A source that discusses the same topic may not support the specific number, quotation, or conclusion.
- Is it current and applicable? Verify publication or update date, jurisdiction, population, definitions, and other context that affects the claim.
- Is confirmation independent? Check whether additional sources provide their own evidence or simply repeat the same material.
When a source does not substantiate a claim, do not preserve the citation just because it looks plausible. Correct or remove the claim, or state clearly what remains uncertain.
Can an AI detector or another prompt prove an answer is true?
No. AI-authorship detection and fact-checking address different questions. The NIST text-to-text evaluation program concerns distinguishing AI-generated text from human-written text; that is not a test of whether a claim is true or adequately sourced. The Commons Library describes AI-detection tools as unreliable, and neither a detector result nor a confident tone establishes factual accuracy.
Likewise, asking the same model to verify its answer does not replace independent evidence. Use sources that can substantiate the claim, and bring in a qualified reviewer when the consequences or subject matter call for one.

When should I ask a human expert?
Escalate when an error could have serious consequences, or when the topic requires specialist interpretation. For decisions involving health, safety, finances, legal rights, employment, or other significant interests, consult an appropriately qualified professional and follow relevant institutional rules. The Commons Library advises that the best guard against AI hallucinations is to check generated material carefully, ideally with an expert.
Guidance also has a defined scope: UNESCO’s generative AI guidance addresses education and research. NIST’s overview of technical approaches to digital content transparency, published November 20, 2024 and updated April 8, 2026, surveys authenticity, provenance, labeling, detection, testing, and auditing; it is not a consumer method for proving a text claim accurate. A UK government framework page is explicitly marked withdrawn, so it should not be treated as current policy.
