The PlayStation Portal update announced on April 9, 2025, added usability features to Sony’s Cloud Streaming Beta: catalog sorting, capture tools, server queues, conditional pausing, inactivity warnings and a post-session feedback screen. It was a software update for the beta—not a hardware revision. Sony later launched Cloud Streaming officially on Portal on November 5, 2025, with a broader set of eligible games.

What the April 2025 Portal update added

Sony described the update as an improvement to the Cloud Streaming Beta experience. These were beta features, and Sony cautioned that they could change before or after the final service launch.

Catalog sorting

Players could sort the beta game catalog by recently added to PlayStation Plus—the default order—by name, or by release date.

Gameplay captures

Pressing the Create button opened a capture menu with controls for opening the menu, taking a screenshot and recording video. Captures uploaded to cloud storage and were available in the PlayStation App under Library > Captures for 14 days. Video clips could be up to 1920 × 1080 resolution and three minutes long.

Server queues

If streaming servers were full, players could join a queue, see an estimated wait and have the game session start automatically when a place became available.

Conditional pause behavior

A streaming game paused when the Portal quick menu opened, when the power button put the device into rest mode, or when a system error appeared. Pause was not available in some situations, including certain online multiplayer games. If the Portal remained in rest mode for more than 15 seconds, the cloud session disconnected.

Inactivity warning and session feedback

After more than 10 minutes without activity, a warning appeared before the session was due to close. At the end of a streaming session, a feedback screen let players rate stream quality.

What Cloud Streaming on Portal means

Cloud Streaming runs an eligible game from Sony’s servers and streams it to the Portal. It does not require a connection to a PS5 console. Remote Play is different: it connects to a paired PS5 and streams games installed on that console.

Play mode Where the game runs PlayStation Plus Console availability Game availability
Remote Play On the paired PS5 Sony says a membership is not required The paired PS5 must be available to connect to Games installed on the paired console
Cloud Streaming On Sony’s servers PlayStation Plus Premium required A PS5 does not need to be powered on or available to another account for a Portal streaming session Eligible games vary by service, country and region

Sony announced the official Portal Cloud Streaming launch for November 5, 2025. Unlike the beta described in the April update, the official service supports select digital PS5 games from a subscriber’s own library as well as eligible titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Sony says availability can vary and change over time. See Sony’s Cloud Streaming launch announcement for the official-service details.

Who could use the beta, and what connection did it need?

The April 2025 beta was for PlayStation Plus Premium members and offered selected PS5 games streamed directly to the Portal. A PS5 console connection was not needed, but the beta catalog and service availability depended on region and could change.

  • 7 Mbps for 720p streaming.
  • 13 Mbps for 1080p streaming.

These are beta requirements, not a complete statement of requirements for the later official service. Sony also said beta performance could vary with the game and network. Its beta support information excluded games outside the PlayStation Plus catalog and PS3 and PS4 games. Check Sony’s Portal Cloud Streaming support page for the beta qualifications.

Which Portal changes were from earlier updates?

The April 2025 Cloud Streaming Beta changes were separate from the Remote Play improvements Sony announced in June 2024. That earlier update added sign-in support for some public Wi-Fi networks requiring additional validation, visual feedback for the Portal’s emulated touchpad areas, and an optional battery percentage in the status bar. Sony’s June 2024 update announcement also said that more than 60 percent of Portal owners used Remote Play for the first time; Sony identified that figure as internal data covering November 2020 through April 2024.
