If you sent an eligible iMessage from an iPhone, act within two minutes: touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Undo Send. Apple’s feature does not unsend SMS, MMS, or RCS messages. If you cannot retract it, send a brief correction if appropriate; if you disclosed sensitive information, secure the affected account or payment method instead of relying on the recipient to delete the message.
Try Undo Send if it was an iMessage
On iPhone, touch and hold the sent message bubble and choose Undo Send. Apple allows this for an eligible iMessage for up to two minutes after sending. The conversation will display an unsent notice. The recipient may still see the original if their Apple operating system is older.
The feature requires iMessage and iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, macOS 13, visionOS 1, or later. See Apple’s guide to unsending or editing messages for the supported-device details.
Know what you can and cannot recall
Apple says, “You can’t edit or unsend SMS, MMS, or RCS text messages.” That applies to Apple’s Undo Send feature; it is not a universal rule for every messaging app. Whether an unsend option exists depends on the app and message type, but deleting a conversation from your own phone does not erase a delivered copy from the recipient’s device.

If Undo Send is unavailable, assume the message may have reached the other phone. A delivery or read indicator does not tell you whether the recipient saved, copied, or shared it.
Decide whether to send a correction
If the message was harmless and the recipient is someone you know, a short, calm note can explain the mistake: “Sorry, that was meant for someone else—please delete it.” Keep it brief and do not repeat any private details. This may help the recipient understand what happened, but it cannot retrieve the message or guarantee they will delete it.

If you do not know the recipient, consider whether replying will help or simply draw more attention to the conversation. Do not send additional personal information to someone whose identity you cannot verify.
Take action if the message exposed sensitive information
Focus on what was disclosed rather than on trying to erase the text. For a password, change it directly through the service’s official app or website; if you reused it elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. For banking or payment details, contact the institution using a phone number on your card, its known app, or a website address you already trust.

Do not use a link or phone number in an unexpected reply. The right next step depends on the information sent; there is no single response that fits every accidental disclosure.
Handle an unexpected “wrong number” text differently
An accidental text you sent is different from a stranger contacting you with a wrong-number opener. The FTC warns that scammers use these messages to start conversations, which may later turn romantic or lead to investment or other fraud. For an unexpected message, do not click links or share information. If it claims to come from a company, bank, or public agency, contact that organization through details you already know are genuine.

The FTC reported that consumers lost $470 million to scams that started with text messages in 2024, five times the amount reported in 2020 despite fewer reports. That figure concerns reported losses from text-started scams; it does not mean an ordinary mistaken text is likely to be a scam. The FTC’s guidance on recognizing and reporting spam texts explains warning signs and reporting options.
