There is no manufacturer-backed percentage that applies to every consumer SSD. Leave usable space available, especially if you regularly write large amounts of data, but treat any fixed percentage as a rule of thumb rather than a guarantee. The amount that helps depends on the drive, its built-in spare capacity, and the kind of work it does.
Why a nearly full SSD can write more slowly
NAND flash cannot overwrite existing data in place. An SSD writes data in pages, but it erases data in larger blocks. To make room for new writes, its controller may need to collect valid pages, move them, and erase blocks containing invalid pages. This process is called garbage collection.
When there is less room to manage data, garbage collection can compete with incoming writes and add work for the controller. Samsung describes this interaction in its 2019 over-provisioning white paper. That explains why a drive under sustained write pressure may be affected by limited headroom; it does not establish a universal fullness point at which every SSD slows down.
How much space should you leave?
For a consumer SSD, the reviewed manufacturer sources do not establish a universal free-space threshold. Keep enough room for your normal work and avoid routinely filling the drive to capacity, but do not treat a particular percentage as a guaranteed performance target. A light-use computer and a drive handling frequent, sustained writes do not necessarily need the same amount of headroom.

Samsung’s published over-provisioning figures illustrate why scope matters, but they are not consumer free-space recommendations:
| Figure | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 6.7% | Samsung said its data-center SSDs typically provided this capacity for over-provisioning by default in a 2019 white paper. | A data-center product statement, not a recommended free-space percentage for consumer SSDs. |
| 7 K, 13 K, and 27 K IOPS | Samsung’s 2024 data-center application note reported these results in an internal 4 KB random-write comparison at 0%, 6.7%, and 28% over-provisioning, respectively. | Test-specific results; Samsung says results can vary with the test environment. They do not predict the performance of an individual consumer drive. |
The 2024 figures come from Samsung Semiconductor’s data-center over-provisioning application note. They show how added reserved capacity affected one tested data-center workload, not how much filesystem space you should leave on a desktop or laptop SSD.

Why your workload and drive design matter
Frequent or random writes
Repeated writes, especially small random writes, can create more management work than lighter or mostly sequential use. Samsung’s data-center guidance says appropriate over-provisioning ratios vary by application and identifies frequent, particularly random, reads and writes as factors that increase write amplification. A workstation that regularly writes large project files, databases, or scratch data may benefit more from available headroom than a computer used mainly for browsing and reading files.
Built-in spare capacity
Over-provisioning is NAND capacity reserved from host use so the SSD can manage data. Some spare capacity may already be part of the drive’s design; the usable capacity shown by your operating system does not reveal the full internal layout. Samsung’s 2019 paper notes that its data-center SSDs typically included 6.7% for over-provisioning by default, but that detail should not be generalized to all SSDs.

Free filesystem space versus over-provisioning
Free space inside a formatted filesystem and a deliberately unallocated over-provisioning area are not the same user-facing setting. Both can leave the controller with more room to manage the device, but only over-provisioning reserves capacity outside the area available to the filesystem.
Samsung’s consumer Internal SSD Product Information FAQ describes its Over Provisioning feature as controlling unallocated area. Whether the feature or a particular control is available depends on the SSD and utility. Check documentation for your exact model before creating or changing an unallocated partition; do not assume every drive supports the same controls.

What to do if you keep running out of space
- Remove or move files you no longer need if the drive is routinely close to full.
- If your workload repeatedly needs substantial write headroom, consider whether a higher-capacity drive would provide more usable room. The evidence here does not support buying a particular model or upgrading solely to reach an arbitrary percentage.
- For a write-intensive workstation or data-center system, use the drive maker’s guidance for that model and workload rather than applying a consumer rule of thumb.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an SSD slow down when it is nearly full?
It can, because garbage collection may have to compete with host writes when less room is available for managing data. The effect depends on the drive and workload; the reviewed sources do not establish a universal fullness point.
Do I need extra free space if my SSD already has over-provisioning?
Built-in over-provisioning reserves capacity for device management, while filesystem free space remains available to your files and operating system. They are distinct, and the evidence does not establish a universal amount of additional free space for every drive.
