Choose a carbide-tipped masonry bit that fits your drill’s chuck or rotary-hammer holder, then match its diameter and working length to the anchor or task instructions. A conventional hammer-drill bit and an SDS-plus bit are different interfaces; they are not interchangeable unless your tool explicitly supports the bit or an adapter. For silica-containing concrete and masonry, plan dust collection as well as bit selection.
Start with the drill’s bit holder
Before comparing bit designs, identify the tool and the holder it accepts. Conventional hammer drills commonly use a keyed or keyless chuck and a compatible straight-shank percussion bit. SDS-plus bits are made for rotary hammers with an SDS-plus holder. Check the exact drill manual and the bit’s specifications rather than assuming that a bit will fit based on its diameter alone.
Do not put an SDS-plus bit in a conventional chuck—or a straight-shank bit in an SDS-plus holder—unless the tool documentation explicitly allows that setup. A compatible chuck or adapter may make some combinations possible, but compatibility must be confirmed for the specific tool.
Conventional hammer drill
Look for a carbide-tipped masonry or percussion bit with a straight shank that fits your drill’s chuck. For example, DEWALT lists its DW5224B25 as a carbide-tipped percussion bit for electric or cordless hammer drills. Treat that as a product example, not a recommendation for every drill; verify the chuck and bit specifications for your own tool.

SDS-plus rotary hammer
Choose an SDS-plus bit for a rotary hammer with an SDS-plus holder. DEWALT lists its DW5427B25 as a carbide-tipped rotary-hammer bit set for concrete, stone, or brick. Confirm the included sizes and compatibility with your rotary hammer before buying.
Choose a masonry-rated carbide tip
For concrete, brick, stone, cement, or cinder block, select a bit identified by its manufacturer for masonry. Bosch identifies carbide-tipped bits for these materials, and DEWALT describes carbide-tipped designs on its masonry-bit product pages. A general-purpose bit without a masonry rating is not a substitute for a purpose-made masonry bit.

Manufacturers offer different tip and flute designs, including two-cutter and four-flute options. The cited product information describes those features but does not establish an independent, cross-brand performance ranking. Choose a design that is specified for your tool and material rather than assuming one cutter arrangement is universally faster or longer-lasting.
Match diameter and working length to the hole
Use the anchor or fastener maker’s instructions to determine the required hole diameter and drilling depth. The bit must provide enough working length for the specified hole, but a larger diameter or longer bit is not automatically better. Some bits include an anchor wear mark to help indicate depth; that feature is product-specific and is not present on every bit.
Rank #3
- Four-cutter carbide tipped head design – delivers up to 2X life in concrete with rebar (vs Hawera SDS-plus two-cutter concrete drill bit)
- Four-cutter head – provides four cutting edges to hit rebar, to help prevent the bit from getting stuck
- Centering tip – ideal for drilling anchoring holes to enhace the precision of hole placement
- Four-flute design – standard flute design efficiently pulls dust away from the hole
- Bosch-made carbide – manufactured by Bosch with quality materials promoting durability and longer life.
- Check the specified hole diameter before selecting the bit.
- Check the required hole depth and the bit’s working length; do not mistake overall bit length for working length.
- Follow the fastener or anchor instructions for drilling and hole preparation.
Adjust your approach for brick and concrete
Brick is softer than concrete, so it can require less pressure. Bosch’s drill manual advises using less pressure for soft materials such as brick than for harder concrete. Keep the bit aligned and apply steady pressure consistent with the tool maker’s instructions. Avoid treating one speed or force setting as a universal rule for every drill, bit, and masonry material.

Drilling silica-containing materials can generate respirable crystalline silica dust. OSHA’s fact sheet on handheld and stand-mounted drills describes this hazard for drills used on concrete, masonry, and other silica-containing materials.

For covered construction work, OSHA’s construction silica standard, Table 1 specifies a commercially available shroud or cowling connected to a dust collection system for handheld and stand-mounted drills, including impact and rotary-hammer drills. The listed setup calls for:
- A shroud or cowling that fits around the bit and is compatible with the vacuum system.
- Operation and maintenance according to the tool maker’s instructions to minimize dust.
- A dust collector providing the airflow recommended by the tool maker or greater, with a filter rated at 99% or greater efficiency and a filter-cleaning mechanism.
- A HEPA-filtered vacuum when cleaning drilled holes.
- For indoor or enclosed work implementing Table 1, a means of exhaust as needed to minimize visible airborne dust accumulation.
OSHA’s requirements apply in the construction-work context; this is not a complete statement of every homeowner’s legal duties. Follow the rules that apply to your work and location, as well as the tool and dust-collector manufacturers’ instructions. A shroud, vacuum, and filter must be compatible with one another and with the tool; do not assume a product meets OSHA’s specifications without checking its performance.

A quick buying checklist
- Identify the tool: determine whether it is a conventional hammer drill with a keyed or keyless chuck or an SDS-plus rotary hammer.
- Match the interface: choose a compatible straight-shank percussion bit or SDS-plus bit, as appropriate, and verify the exact tool manual.
- Confirm the material: select a carbide-tipped bit specified for the concrete, brick, block, or stone you are drilling.
- Check the dimensions: use the anchor or task instructions for hole diameter and depth, then select sufficient working length.
- Account for dust: where required or appropriate, confirm that the shroud, dust collector, filter, and hole-cleaning method are compatible and meet the relevant requirements.
