If your robot vacuum will not join Wi-Fi or appears offline in its app, check the selected network, password, model compatibility and app permissions first. Then improve the signal, restart the equipment and—if needed—reset the vacuum’s Wi-Fi using the instructions for your exact model. Wi-Fi requirements and reset controls vary by manufacturer, so do not assume a fix for one brand applies to every robot.
1. Check the home network and password
- Confirm your phone is connected to the home Wi-Fi network you want the vacuum to use.
- In the vacuum’s app, select that home network and carefully re-enter its password. During setup, the robot may broadcast a temporary Wi-Fi network; that is not the home network the vacuum should use for normal operation.
These are among the initial checks in Roborock’s Wi-Fi failure and offline-device guidance and its Android setup instructions. App labels and setup flows may differ for other brands.
2. Verify the vacuum’s Wi-Fi band requirements
Look up the Wi-Fi specifications for your exact model before changing router settings. Roborock states that its current robots support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and do not support 5 GHz; that limitation should not be generalized to every robot-vacuum brand. If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name, Roborock recommends trying that network first. If setup fails, ask your internet provider or router manufacturer whether separating the bands or another configuration step is appropriate. See Roborock’s Wi-Fi band guidance.
3. Check app permissions on your phone
Permissions can prevent an app from discovering or configuring a robot. For Roborock, the support instructions call for location permission; the iOS guidance also says to allow local-network access on iOS 14 or later. Its Android setup instructions likewise mention location permission. Check the current prompts in your app and the settings for your phone’s operating system, since requirements can vary with app and OS versions. Refer to the offline and connection-failure steps or the Android setup guide for Roborock-specific instructions.

4. Improve signal and check router security
Try setup near the router
Move the robot closer to the router for setup if the signal may be weak. A Roborock S4 Max manual lists poor Wi-Fi signal as a possible cause and recommends a location with good reception. Consult the S4 Max manual or the manual for your own model for its specific guidance.
Confirm encryption support before changing settings
Roborock’s general troubleshooting guidance says WEP is unsupported and advises WPA or WPA2. Security compatibility is model- and router-dependent, however, so check the vacuum’s manual or ask its manufacturer and your router provider before changing encryption. An unfamiliar router change can affect other devices on your network.

Leave advanced router changes for targeted troubleshooting
Roborock mentions removing special characters from the network name or password and changing DNS to 8.8.8.8 as possible troubleshooting suggestions. These are brand-specific options, not routine requirements for every robot. Consider them only if the manufacturer’s instructions point you there and you are comfortable changing router settings; otherwise ask the router manufacturer or internet provider for help.

- Restart the robot and router, then try adding or reconnecting the robot in the app again.
- If the connection still fails or the Wi-Fi configuration seems abnormal, use the Wi-Fi reset procedure for your exact model and add the robot again in the app.
- Follow the model’s own button sequence and indicator instructions. For example, the Roborock S7 manual describes holding designated buttons until a “Resetting WiFi” alert and a slowly flashing Wi-Fi indicator; other models may use different buttons or an app flow. See the Roborock S7 manual.
A Wi-Fi reset is not the same as a factory reset. Do not use a factory reset as an early troubleshooting step: it may remove settings, and the Wi-Fi reset is the more targeted procedure described for connection problems.

6. Know what to do if it remains offline
Contact the vacuum manufacturer if the model-specific setup and reset steps do not restore the connection. If its support team identifies a router setting or network problem, contact your internet provider or router manufacturer. Roborock’s band guidance also directs users to those providers when router configuration may be involved.
Can the vacuum still clean without Wi-Fi?
Possibly. Roborock says its robots can perform basic cleanups and return to the dock using their buttons without Wi-Fi, while app features such as scheduling require a connection. This is Roborock-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every model or brand. Check your vacuum’s manual to see which physical-button functions remain available offline.
