Samsung Display’s Penta Tandem is a five-layer organic light-emitting structure for QD-OLED panels. Samsung says it delivers 1.3 times the luminous efficiency and twice the lifespan of its previous four-layer QD-OLED generation. It also reports peak brightness of up to 4,500 nits for TVs and 1,300 nits for monitors—but those peaks are measured at a 3% On Pixel Ratio, not across a full screen.
What Penta Tandem changes in a QD-OLED panel
QD-OLED combines an organic light-emitting layer with quantum dots that convert light into the colours used to form an image. Penta Tandem is Samsung Display’s name for a five-layer organic emitting structure in that panel technology. It adds an organic material layer compared with the company’s preceding four-layer QD-OLED design.
Samsung Display says distributing the work across more organic layers improves luminous efficiency. In practical terms, a more efficient panel can produce greater brightness at the same power, or maintain a given brightness while using less power. The company describes the arrangement as five people carrying a load that four people previously carried: the group can either work with less strain or lift more.
What Samsung claims about efficiency and lifespan
In its February 12, 2026 announcement, Samsung Display compared Penta Tandem with its previous year’s four-layer QD-OLED generation and reported 1.3 times the luminous efficiency and twice the lifespan. Its 2026 investor presentation repeats those claims.

The lifespan figure is relative, not an hours rating: Samsung’s release does not state an absolute lifespan or describe an independent longevity test. It therefore does not establish how long a particular finished TV or monitor will last in ordinary use. The efficiency comparison is also a manufacturer claim about the panel design, not a guarantee that every product using it will be brighter or consume less power in every setting.
How to interpret the brightness figures
Samsung Display reports maximum brightness of 4,500 nits for TVs and 1,300 nits for monitors, with both figures measured at 3% On Pixel Ratio (OPR). OPR is the share of screen pixels that are active; at 3%, only a small area is lit. These are small-area peak figures, not sustained full-screen brightness measurements.

Because the active area is small, these peaks should not be read as brightness a viewer can expect across an entire image. The release does not supply matching full-screen brightness results or independent measurements for individual products.
Does every QD-OLED TV or monitor use Penta Tandem?
No. Penta Tandem describes a panel structure; it does not guarantee that every QD-OLED display uses that generation or that finished products share the same specifications. Samsung Display says eligible panels can obtain VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification, but that does not mean every product with such a panel is certified.

MSI has announced that it is integrating the technology across its 2026 QD-OLED monitor lineup. That is a maker’s lineup announcement, not confirmation of retail availability or proof of the panel specification in every individual listing. Check the exact model’s product specifications before treating Penta Tandem as a feature.

- Panel generation: Look for an explicit Penta Tandem or five-layer panel identification, rather than inferring it from the QD-OLED label.
- Screen and image specifications: Compare size, resolution and refresh rate for the work and games you use.
- Warranty: Read the model’s warranty terms rather than assuming a panel-level lifespan claim defines coverage.
- Independent brightness measurements: Check measurements for the finished monitor and note the test conditions; do not substitute Samsung’s 3% OPR peak for full-screen or sustained brightness.
