PayPal is listed as an accepted payment method for the U.S. PlayStation Store. You can add it under your account’s Payment Management settings and select it at checkout. Sony’s current support page confirms availability, but does not establish when PayPal first became available in the U.S.
Where PayPal works—and what “PlayStation Network” means here
Sony’s current U.S. payment page lists PayPal for PlayStation Store purchases. That is the specific flow its documentation covers; it does not guarantee that checkout works identically on every PlayStation generation or interface. Sony also cautions that payment options vary by country or region, so the U.S. list should not be assumed to apply to other Store regions. See PlayStation’s accepted payment methods.

PayPal checkout and wallet funding are different
You can pay for a Store purchase with an eligible payment method at checkout, or add money to your PlayStation Store wallet first. An adult account can fund its wallet with an eligible payment method or a PlayStation Store gift card. When you buy something, wallet funds are used first; another payment method can cover any remaining amount.
To add wallet funds online, sign in to PlayStation Store, open the profile menu, then choose Payment Management > Add Funds. Select a payment method and amount, then confirm.

For the latest steps and account-specific details, see Sony’s wallet-funding guide. Sony’s U.S. terms say wallet funds are non-refundable and non-transferable except where the law requires; this concerns wallet funds, not PayPal’s own refund rules. Read the PlayStation Terms of Service.
PS3 and PS Vita require a different route
Since October 27, 2021, Sony has not allowed direct card or PayPal payments, or wallet funding, through the PS3 and PS Vita Store interfaces. You can add wallet funds using a browser, mobile device, PS4, or PS5, then use those funds for eligible purchases on the older system. This limitation is specific to the PS3 and PS Vita interfaces; it does not mean PayPal is unavailable throughout PlayStation. Sony’s notice explains the legacy-console restriction.

If PayPal or another payment method will not link
Check that the payment details are compatible with your account’s Store region. Sony warns that card details associated with a different country may not link. A payment method being listed for the U.S. Store also does not guarantee that every PayPal account or individual transaction will work.
Quick Recap
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account with the correct Store region.
- Review Sony’s payment troubleshooting guide if card information will not link.
- If you are using a PS3 or PS Vita, add wallet funds through a supported device or browser instead of the console Store interface.
- If direct checkout is unavailable to you, a PlayStation Store gift card is another documented way to add wallet funds.
