If an iOS app builds in Xcode but fails on an iPhone or iPad, first identify where it fails: during the build, installation, launch, or while running. A successful build alone does not confirm that Xcode built for the intended device, that signing and installation will work, or that the app will run correctly. Follow the troubleshooting branch that matches the symptom, and keep the exact error message handy.
First identify the failure stage
Note what happens when you run the app and preserve the literal error from Xcode or the device. The next step depends on whether the app cannot be built for the device, cannot be installed, closes as it launches, or opens but behaves incorrectly.
- Build failure: Xcode stops before producing an app for the device. Check the run destination, scheme, platform support, and—only if the error implicates it—architecture settings.
- Installation failure: The build completes, but the app is rejected or does not appear on the device. Check device availability, signing, provisioning, and how the app was installed.
- Launch failure: The app installs but immediately terminates or cannot start. Capture runtime or crash information and note the device and iOS version.
- Runtime problem: The app opens, but its behavior differs from the simulator or is incorrect. Reproduce the issue on the device and compare the relevant build configuration.
For any launch or runtime issue, record the device model, iOS version, and whether you ran a Debug or Release build. Apple notes that a problem can occur only with a particular device and operating-system combination, and recommends testing Release builds on actual hardware (Apple’s guidance on testing a release build).
If Xcode cannot run the app on your device
Select the physical device and check the scheme
- Connect the iPhone or iPad, then select it in Xcode’s run-destination control. Make sure the selected destination is the physical device, not an iOS Simulator or a generic build-only destination.
- Check the active scheme and confirm it includes the app target you intend to run.
- If the device or target is unavailable, confirm that the platform support required for it is installed in Xcode. Apple notes that missing platform support prevents building and running for that target.
Apple’s instructions for running on simulated or physical devices explain how to choose a destination and address platform support.

Make the device available to Xcode
Check that the connected iPhone or iPad appears in Xcode or Device Hub, and respond to any trust prompt on the device. If it does not appear as an available run destination, Xcode cannot use it for that run.
If the app builds but will not install
Check signing and provisioning
- Sign in to your Apple account in Xcode if you have not already.
- Select the app target and assign it to the appropriate development team.
- Check that the bundle identifier is unique for the app.
- For a typical development setup, use automatic signing. Xcode can register a connected device and create the development provisioning profile as needed.
If the project requires manual signing, verify that the device is registered and that the provisioning profile is current and covers the app. Apple’s device-running guidance covers physical-device signing; its registered-device distribution instructions cover registration and profiles.

Check whether the app came from an exported archive
Developer Mode is relevant to a specific case: installing an app from an iOS Package Archive (IPA). Apple’s instructions for distributing an app to registered devices address Developer Mode for that route. Do not treat it as a general fix for every app that fails during an Xcode run; first establish how the app was installed and read the actual installation error.
If the app installs but crashes or behaves differently
Collect evidence from the device
- Reproduce the failure with the debugger attached, or inspect the device’s crash reports if the app terminates.
- Record the device model, iOS version, and build configuration, along with what action triggers the problem.
- Compare Debug and Release behavior if the problem appears only in one configuration.
Testing in a simulator cannot fully rule out a physical-device issue. As Apple puts it, “simulators run within Device Hub on your Mac and don’t replicate the performance or features of a physical device” (Apple, Running your app on simulated or physical devices). A real-device reproduction is especially useful when the issue is specific to a device or iOS version, or appears only in a Release build (Apple, Testing a release build).

If the error mentions architecture
Do not change architecture settings just because a device run failed. Investigate them when the build error points to an architecture mismatch or related setting. Apple’s TN3117 on resolving architecture build errors recommends restoring ARCHS, VALID_ARCHS, and EXCLUDED_ARCHS to their defaults for each target as the first step when those settings are responsible.
