ASUS and Xbox turned the rumored “Project Kennan” into two announced handheld PCs: the ROG Xbox Ally and the higher-spec ROG Xbox Ally X. ASUS builds the hardware with Xbox’s collaboration; these are Windows 11 gaming PCs with an Xbox full-screen experience, not Microsoft-made Xbox consoles that run the entire console library natively.

What ASUS and Xbox actually announced

ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally lineup on June 8, 2025, and Microsoft described the partnership the next day. ASUS later set October 16, 2025 as the on-shelf date. The product is best understood as an ASUS handheld PC shaped in collaboration with Xbox, extending the Xbox experience to portable Windows hardware—not as a standalone first-party Microsoft handheld. ASUS’s announcement and Microsoft’s partnership announcement describe the collaboration.

Xbox’s broader strategy is to let players move among console, handheld, PC, cloud, and accessories. Its announced multi-year partnership with AMD is for co-engineering silicon for a wider portfolio that includes future first-party consoles and cloud. That supports a cross-device direction, but it does not establish a specific future Xbox hardware schedule or confirm another handheld. Xbox’s AMD partnership announcement frames the effort at that platform level.

How the two ROG Xbox Ally models differ

The Ally X is a higher-tier configuration, not merely a cosmetic variant. The specifications below are from ASUS launch materials and Microsoft’s developer resource page; check the local product listing for the current specification sheet before buying.

Will it run Xbox games or just Windows games?

It runs Windows 11 and offers an Xbox full-screen experience at startup, bringing games from Xbox/Game Pass where available together with installed games from Battle.net and other leading PC stores. Access to games takes several forms, and they should not be conflated:

  • Installed PC games: Play compatible PC games installed on the handheld directly.
  • Xbox Play Anywhere: Xbox said more than 1,000 supported titles could be played across console, PC, and handheld with one purchase. The count was stated in its September 25, 2025 preorder announcement; it is not a guarantee that every Xbox console game runs natively on the device.
  • Remote Play: Stream games from a player’s own Xbox console to the handheld over a network, such as at home.
  • Xbox Cloud Gaming: Stream supported games through the service, which Xbox described as in beta and available only where supported. Cloud play depends on service availability and a suitable network.

These are distinct routes: native installed PC play does not require console streaming, while Remote Play and cloud gaming do. Xbox’s preorder announcement outlines the access options and compatibility program.

How to judge game compatibility

Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility Program uses “Handheld Optimized” and “Mostly Compatible” labels. ASUS said Optimized games should provide controller inputs, readable text, and a suitable full-screen resolution. Mostly Compatible games may need minor setting changes. The launch announcement said thousands of games would receive one of these labels; that is a launch-era claim, not a current catalog count.

For a game you already own, check its current label and whether you intend to install it, stream it from a console, or use cloud gaming. Those methods have different requirements: a compatibility label speaks to handheld usability, while remote and cloud play also depend on network and regional service availability.

What the “bigger play” does—and does not—tell us

The Ally collaboration fits Xbox’s explicit effort to make its platform available across more kinds of devices and stores. Xbox described the goal as an experience “not locked to a single store or tied to one device” in its June 19, 2025 announcement. That is platform strategy, not evidence that the Ally is a next-generation console or that Microsoft has announced another handheld.

Windows Central reported on July 14, 2025 that Microsoft had sidelined plans for a separate first-party handheld while focusing on the ASUS collaboration, and used “Project Kennan” for the partner device. Treat that as attributed reporting, not an official confirmation of Microsoft’s long-term hardware plans. The official announcements establish the ASUS partnership and broader direction; whether Microsoft will later make its own handheld remains unresolved. Windows Central’s report covers the separate-device claim.

Storage and launch promotion details

Xbox’s September 25, 2025 announcement said a separately sold microSD card could provide capacity up to 2 TB, and named a SanDisk card. That announcement does not guarantee compatibility for every card or establish present-day pricing or stock. The same announcement described a three-month Xbox Game Pass offer in select markets, subject to terms; it is historical offer information, not proof that the promotion remains active or is available in every region.
