A farm apprenticeship or internship can combine hands-on work with training, but the duties, pay, hours, and credentials depend on the farm, program, and country. Apprenticeships are generally structured employment-and-training routes; “internship” is less consistently defined. Before accepting either, check the written terms, training plan, supervisor, schedule, and local rules.

What work might you do on a farm?

Duties vary with the operation and the season. A livestock placement may include feeding animals, cleaning living areas, using milking equipment, observing animal welfare, and following biosecurity practices. Crop work may involve pruning, spraying, grass cutting, irrigation, tree care, and harvesting. Other tasks can include maintaining machinery, repairing equipment or farm buildings, and keeping activity records. These are examples, not a standard checklist for every placement. The UK careers service describes farm work and its conditions at its farm worker profile.

One advertised crop role is an example, not a benchmark

An England crop technician vacancy posted on 17 July 2026 listed a two-year role at 35 hours a week, with first-year pay of £14,560. Its duties included pruning, spraying, grass cutting, irrigation, and tractor and machinery repairs; it also said the apprentice might later supervise seasonal harvest workers. Those details describe that specific vacancy, not typical farm placement hours or pay. See the vacancy listing.

How an apprenticeship combines work and learning

In England, an apprenticeship combines paid employment and practical work with related training and study. Apprentices work alongside experienced staff and receive job-specific training. The government’s general apprenticeship overview says that, in the standard model, at least 20% of normal working hours is allocated to training and study. This is England-specific guidance, not a rule to apply to programs elsewhere. England’s apprenticeship overview.

What counts as training time in England?

England guidance describes off-the-job training as learning during working hours, agreed in a plan involving the apprentice, employer, and training provider. It may be delivered through provider or college classes, online learning, practical training, mentoring, assignments, or projects. Routine duties and meetings alone do not count as off-the-job training. Ask how the farm will schedule training, review progress, record learning, and prepare you for assessment. Read the official off-the-job training guidance.

Farm-worker standards and assessment

England’s general farm worker apprenticeship standard has livestock and crop options. It covers practical duties, safe working, biosecurity, machinery or vehicle operation, and maintaining farm infrastructure. The standard page identifies ST0937 version 1.3, updated 18 September 2026, with a typical duration of 18 months before assessment and a minimum of 348 compliance hours. These are details of the England standard, which may change; they do not describe every farm apprenticeship. Check the current standard.

How an internship may differ

Apprenticeships are generally longer and more formally structured, with a training plan, supervision, occupational skills development, and often a credential. U.S. Department of Labor guidance describes internships as often shorter and less structured, but says the department has no official definition of “internship” or “externship.” Treat those contrasts as general guidance, not a universal legal test. An internship may be paid or unpaid, short or extended, closely supervised or not; examine the actual offer. See the Department of Labor’s internship guidance.

The word “internship” does not by itself settle whether a role must be paid or what labor protections apply. In the United States, compensation and worker status can depend on the specific arrangement and applicable federal and state law. Use current guidance for the relevant location and circumstances; a Maryland Extension fact sheet from May 2016 is a reminder to consider the law, not current legal advice. Read the Maryland Extension fact sheet.

Hours and conditions follow the farm calendar

Schedules can change with crop or livestock work, weather, staffing, and the farm’s shift pattern. Busy periods such as lambing and harvest may mean long hours, according to the UK careers guidance. Before accepting, ask about early starts, weekends, seasonal peaks, overtime or time off, and whether housing or transport is available.

Farm work may take place outdoors in all weather, and protective clothing may be required. The right boots, clothing, and other protective equipment depend on the task and the farm’s rules. Ask the host what footwear and PPE specifications apply rather than assuming that one kit list fits every placement.

Pay, employment status, and what may come next

In England, apprentices are employees. Official guidance describes entitlements that include pay under the applicable age and apprenticeship-stage rules, paid leave, a safe workplace, a written apprenticeship agreement, and planned training time. Check the current rules for your situation; English rates and entitlements should not be assumed to apply in another country. Read the England guidance on apprentice pay and rights.

For an internship, check the written offer and current local rules to establish compensation and status. The job title alone is not enough to determine whether it must be paid. In the U.S., consult current federal and state guidance for the specific arrangement rather than treating a general comparison—or an older fact sheet—as a legal ruling.

Farm work can lead to supervisory duties, machinery or contracting roles, or assistant farm management. Workers may also move between farms to develop their careers. These are possible routes, not guaranteed results of completing an apprenticeship or internship. The UK careers profile discusses farm-worker progression.

Compare the actual offers, not just their labels

Registered apprenticeships are one formal route in U.S. agriculture, but the numbers are not a count of every trainee or internship. The U.S. Department of Labor’s agriculture industry page reported 4,688 registered apprentices served in 2025, a 40% increase over the previous five years. See the agency’s agriculture data.
