The right pirate game depends on the adventure you want: choose Sea of Thieves for shared-world sailing and player-made crew stories, Skull and Bones for ship combat and ship-build choices, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag for a Caribbean pirate action-adventure, or Sid Meier’s Pirates! for a classic mix of activities. These are distinctions in how publishers describe each game—not a tested ranking of which one plays best.

Which pirate game should you play?

What you want Start with Why it fits
Shared-world sailing, discovery, and unscripted crew stories Sea of Thieves Rare describes an open shared pirate world for roaming, discovering, fighting, and looting, alongside quests and player-created stories. Rare’s Adventure page
Linked, authored story quests Sea of Thieves Rare describes Tall Tales as linked cinematic narratives. Its A Pirate’s Life campaign brings together the worlds of Sea of Thieves and Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean. Rare’s game information
Naval combat and ship-build choice Skull and Bones Ubisoft frames it as an open-world naval action RPG centered on ship combat and ship builds, with PvE and PvEvP play described on its current game page. Ubisoft’s description
A Caribbean pirate action-adventure with a historical setting Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Ubisoft places the action in the Caribbean in 1715, when pirates established a lawless republic. Ubisoft’s game page
A classic blend of pirate activities Sid Meier’s Pirates! Publisher materials describe treasure maps, missions, sword fighting, ship combat, and dancing. The feature list cited here is from the Wii announcement; it does not establish current platform availability. Take-Two’s Wii announcement

How the games differ

Naval combat and ship choices

Skull and Bones is the clearest fit if you want the ship to be the center of the pirate fantasy: Ubisoft specifically emphasizes naval combat and ship-build choice. Sea of Thieves also includes ship-to-ship combat, but Rare presents it as one part of a broader shared-world adventure that includes discovery, quests, and looting. Rare’s game information

That difference describes each publisher’s stated emphasis; it does not establish that one game’s combat is more enjoyable or better balanced. The available descriptions do not provide a controlled comparison of combat quality.

Exploration and setting

Rare describes Sea of Thieves as a shared world built around roaming and discovery. Ubisoft describes Skull and Bones as an open-world pirate game set in the Indian Ocean. For a Caribbean setting in 1715, Ubisoft’s description points to Black Flag. These settings and design descriptions help narrow the choice, but they are not a measure of how much exploration or how large a world feels in play.

Adventure Time Pirates of the Enchiridion (Nintendo Switch) (Code in Box)

  • Set sail across the high seas between kingdoms and venture into uncharted territories to figure out what's going on
  • Upgrade your heroes, use items, spells, potions and unique ultimate hero abilities to battle bad guys in fast-paced tactical combat
  • This product is code in box. It does not contain a disc or cartridge

Story: authored quests or crew-made adventures?

Sea of Thieves supports both forms. Its Tall Tales are linked story quests; its broader shared-world format can also produce player-created stories rather than a session that follows a single linear plot. Rare calls A Pirate’s Life “an original story campaign that sees the worlds of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean and Sea of Thieves colliding in epic fashion.” Rare’s official FAQ

Black Flag is described by Ubisoft as a pirate action-adventure, but the cited official description does not detail its story systems. For Skull and Bones, the publisher description foregrounds naval play and ship builds rather than making a specific claim about a story campaign.

Make the choice by your preferred pirate fantasy

  • Pick Sea of Thieves if you want shared-world exploration, crew play, and a mix of emergent adventures and linked story quests.
  • Pick Skull and Bones if naval combat and ship-build decisions are your main draw.
  • Pick Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag if you want a pirate action-adventure set in the Caribbean in 1715.
  • Consider Sid Meier’s Pirates! if a classic variety of pirate activities appeals to you, after confirming it is available for your platform.

These recommendations reflect publisher descriptions, not hands-on testing or an independent review comparison. They identify differences in design emphasis, not a single best game for every player.
