If your Ring doorbell keeps dropping its Wi-Fi connection, start with the Ring app’s Device Health screen—not a factory reset. Check the device’s network status and signal strength, verify its power and Wi-Fi credentials, then compare internet speeds at the router and the door. Those checks help distinguish weak coverage from a power, setup, or router-compatibility problem.

Start with the Ring app’s connection report

Open the Ring app, select the doorbell, and view Device Health. Check whether it is marked offline and note any error code. In Device Health, open Network and choose Reconnect or Change Network, then follow the prompts. If setup fails, pay attention to the doorbell’s light and audio cues; the instructions can vary by model. Ring’s offline-device guidance describes this flow.

Use the same phone you used to set up the doorbell if possible, and have the Wi-Fi password ready. Passwords are case-sensitive. Ring’s setup troubleshooting guidance covers reconnecting and setup problems.

Check power before blaming the network

Confirm a battery-powered doorbell is switched on and charged. For a wired model, verify that its transformer or power supply meets the requirements for that exact model; there is no single power specification that applies to every Ring doorbell.

A low battery reading does not prove the battery caused the disconnection. Ring says a weak Wi-Fi connection can make a Video Doorbell or camera repeatedly disconnect and reconnect, which may drain its battery. See Ring’s battery-performance guidance.

RSSI Ring’s label What it can mean
0 to -60 Great Strong signal according to Ring’s guidance.
-60 to -70 Okay Generally acceptable signal according to Ring’s guidance.
-70 to -80 Poor Delays or interruptions may occur.
-80 or worse Very poor The device may work intermittently or fall offline.

Compare speed at the router and the door

Using a phone connected to the same Wi-Fi network, run a speed test beside the router and another at the doorbell’s location. A much weaker result at the door points toward a coverage problem rather than a password issue. Ring’s recommendations page gives an illustrative example of 2 Mbps for one doorbell and 3.5 Mbps for one camera, or 5.5 Mbps combined for those two example devices. That example is not a universal requirement for every model or household.

Improve the signal before buying equipment

Reduce distance and obstructions

If signal or speed is weak at the door, move the router closer if practical. Keep it out of a cupboard, away from behind furniture, and raised off the floor. Brick, stucco, or metal walls, large appliances such as refrigerators and ovens, electronics, and mirrors can interfere with Wi-Fi. Ring’s connection guidance discusses these placement factors.

Check the Wi-Fi band and router setup

Wi-Fi band support depends on the doorbell model. Ring’s general offline guidance suggests trying 2.4 GHz, but do not assume that one band or router setting is right for every device. Check the specifications and instructions for your exact model before changing networks.

If the app reports an incompatible network or encryption setting, follow the instructions for that model and error. Ring’s setup guidance identifies WPA3 as an example of an unsupported encryption mode for a limited subset of products and recommends WPA2-Personal for those affected cases. Do not weaken your router’s security indiscriminately; confirm the model and message, or ask your internet provider or router maker for help.

Ring also warns that multiple Wi-Fi routers can cause connection problems. Its offline-device guidance advises using one router or asking your provider or router maker about bridge mode.

Restart the modem and router

Unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, and then check the doorbell’s connection again. Where appropriate, Ring also suggests testing a different network, such as a guest network. A guest-network test can help identify whether the home network’s configuration is involved; it does not by itself identify which setting is responsible.

Consider an extender or mesh only if the readings point to weak coverage

If the signal is poor at the doorbell but adequate near the router, first consider whether moving the router or changing its placement can solve the gap. Ring lists Chime Pro as an option for boosting a Ring device’s signal and eero mesh as an option for broader Wi-Fi coverage. Ring describes both in its Wi-Fi recommendations.

The right scope depends on what your checks show: a single weak door location may call for a nearer access point or extender, while poor signal in several rooms is a broader coverage problem that may justify considering mesh Wi-Fi. Buying hardware without first checking signal and speed may not fix a power, credential, or compatibility issue.

Reset or contact support only after simpler checks

If the doorbell remains offline after checking power, credentials, signal, router setup, and restarting the modem and router, Ring recommends reset or power-cycle troubleshooting before setting up the device again. Reset procedures differ by model, so use the instructions for your specific doorbell rather than a generic button sequence. Ring’s offline-device guide provides the next steps.

Contact Ring Support or your internet provider if the connection remains unstable despite good signal and speed readings, or if resolving the issue appears to require router changes you are unsure how to make.
