Yes—DLSS 5 takes a rendered 2D frame as an input, but NVIDIA’s later technical descriptions do not portray it as a filter working on that image alone. They describe a generative rendering stage that also uses motion vectors, temporal state and artistic-direction inputs, with the engine-rendered scene grounding its output. NVIDIA says DLSS 5 adds learned lighting and material appearance while aiming to preserve the authored scene and artists’ intent.
What “2D data” means for DLSS 5
A rendered frame is screen-space, or 2D, data: it shows the scene from the current viewpoint as pixels. NVIDIA’s March 16, 2026 announcement said DLSS 5 uses each frame’s color and motion vectors as inputs to an AI model that adds lighting and materials. That makes the “2D data” description relevant, but incomplete as a description of the system.
In a March 22, 2026 report, HotHardware attributed to NVIDIA GeForce evangelist Jacob Freeman the statement that DLSS 5 takes a 2D frame plus motion vectors as input and infers materials from the rendered frame. The report framed those comments around an early preview. NVIDIA’s later technical explanations add more detail about how the model is conditioned and grounded.
NVIDIA’s [September 1, 2026 research overview](https://research.nvidia.com/labs/adlr/DLSS5/) describes DLSS 5 as “a real-time generative rendering stage for interactive graphics.” Its [September 22, 2026 developer blog](https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/whats-new-for-game-developers-dlss-5-with-3d-guided-neural-rendering-nvidia-ace-updates-and-new-rtx-kit-capabilities) says the engine-rendered frame—including artist-authored geometry, textures and lighting buffers—is the foundation for the output.

How NVIDIA describes the DLSS 5 pipeline
NVIDIA’s technical description combines screen-space input with temporal and engine-related information. The model is not described simply as taking one isolated screenshot and applying a visual effect.
- Rendered frame: The current frame provides the visible scene; NVIDIA says the engine-rendered image and its authored content ground the generated result.
- Motion vectors: These engine-provided data help the system account for how visible elements move between frames.
- Temporal state: The research overview says information is carried forward over time. NVIDIA describes the model as trained for frame-to-frame stability.
- Artistic direction: Values supplied by the developer can guide the appearance of the result.
- Renderer-derived supervision: NVIDIA says training uses consistency supervision from renderer-derived scene attributes to ground generation in the authored scene.
NVIDIA characterizes the model as a one-step pixel-space diffusion model. Its developer blog describes a one-frame-in, one-frame-out pipeline. These are NVIDIA’s accounts of the design, not independent measurements of visual quality or performance.

Is DLSS 5 just an AI filter, and does it change geometry?
Calling DLSS 5 an AI filter misses NVIDIA’s description of it as a generative rendering stage that uses engine data and temporal context. But the available descriptions also do not establish that the system reconstructs or edits a game’s underlying geometry. NVIDIA instead says the engine-rendered frame grounds the output and describes preserving scene structure and artistic intent.
NVIDIA says DLSS 5 is intended to add learned lighting and material appearance—for example, effects such as subsurface scattering on skin, sheen on fabric and light interaction with hair. These are vendor claims about intended behavior. The sources cited here do not provide independent, controlled image-quality comparisons, so they cannot establish how convincing the result looks across games or scenes.

What developers can control
NVIDIA’s September developer blog documents controls intended to let developers shape the result rather than accept a single fixed look:
- Model selection and mixing: Developers can select and combine models.
- Structure Intensity and Tone Intensity: These controls adjust aspects of the generated treatment.
- Semantic AI masks: The system can use masks for recognized scene elements.
- Engine-level masks: Developers can target objects or asset groups, with examples including foliage, glassware and water droplets.
NVIDIA’s March announcement also described intensity, color-grading and masking controls. NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang called DLSS 5 “the GPT moment for graphics” in the March 16 launch announcement; that is NVIDIA’s promotional characterization, not an independent assessment.

GPU requirements, availability and game support
NVIDIA’s September 22 developer blog says local DLSS 5 operation runs on a single GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU and is designed for resolutions up to 4K. “Up to 4K” is a design capability claim, not a performance benchmark, and the cited description does not identify a specific RTX 50 model or establish identical performance across cards.
An NVIDIA GeForce Forums FAQ search listing dated September 3, 2026 says DLSS 5 debuted in NBA 2K27 for GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and GeForce NOW. The listing also says NVIDIA planned to work on expanding official support to RTX 40 Series after further tuning for RTX 50 Series; it gives no RTX 40 Series launch date. Because the FAQ page itself did not provide readable text, those availability details should be understood as information from the listing, not a confirmed schedule.

NVIDIA’s March announcement named games including AION 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Black State, CINDER CITY, Delta Force, Hogwarts Legacy, Justice, NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, NTE: Neverness to Everness, Phantom Blade Zero, Resident Evil Requiem, Sea of Remnants, Starfield, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and Where Winds Meet. An announced or listed title is not, by itself, proof that DLSS 5 is currently shipping in that game. Check the game’s current release notes or settings for confirmation.
What the published evidence does—and does not—show
NVIDIA’s public technical material explains the intended inputs, controls and design goals, but it is not a substitute for independent testing. The sources cited here do not establish a controlled comparison of DLSS 5 against native rendering or another rendering mode. To judge a particular implementation, useful questions include how the image looks, whether it remains stable during motion, what performance cost it has on the specific GPU and game, and which developer controls are exposed.
Two figures in NVIDIA’s March announcement are easy to misread: its claim of a 375,000-fold increase in compute is a broad historical comparison, not a measured DLSS 5 performance gain; and its statement that DLSS had been integrated in more than 750 games refers to the wider DLSS suite, not the number of games supporting DLSS 5.
