Both the Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F are 65 W Zen 4 desktop processors for AMD’s AM5 platform, but neither can display a picture on its own: AMD specifies that each requires a discrete graphics card. The 8700F adds two cores and has a higher maximum boost; the 8400F has a slightly higher base clock. Those specifications do not establish which is faster or the better buy in games. That depends on current local prices and comparable tests using your intended graphics card, games, resolution and settings.
Ryzen 7 8700F vs. Ryzen 5 8400F at a glance
AMD’s product pages and May 2024 F-Series guide list these key differences. The figures are manufacturer specifications, not comparative gaming-test results.

What the core and clock differences mean for a gaming build
The 8700F has more cores and a higher listed boost
The 8700F’s 8 cores and 16 threads give it more parallel processing capacity on paper than the 8400F’s 6 cores and 12 threads. Its maximum boost specification is also 300 MHz higher. These facts alone do not predict game frame rates: CPU and GPU workload, game, resolution, settings, memory, BIOS and test method all matter.
#1 Best Overall
- THE STARTING POINT FOR A SERIOUS GAMING PC WITH AI
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, with advanced AMD "Zen 4" architecture
- 5.0 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, DDR5 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, upgradable for years to come
The 8400F has a marginally higher base clock
AMD lists a 4.2 GHz base clock for the 8400F and 4.1 GHz for the 8700F. Base and maximum boost clocks describe different operating conditions; the higher base figure does not by itself make the 8400F the faster gaming CPU.
No controlled 8700F-versus-8400F game test data is established by the cited sources. Treat the specification sheet as a comparison of hardware features, not a performance ranking.

What your build needs besides the processor
A discrete graphics card
The F designation is especially important when planning the display path: AMD says both processors require a discrete graphics card. Do not expect a usable display output from the CPU alone. Select the GPU around your budget, games and target resolution; there is not enough information here to recommend a particular model.
An AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory
Both processors use socket AM5 and DDR5 memory. Choose a compatible AM5 motherboard and check its CPU support information and BIOS requirements for the exact model before buying. Neither cited product page names a particular motherboard or memory kit.

Cooling and package details
AMD’s May 2024 guide lists a Wraith Stealth cooler for both CPUs. Confirm the precise retail package or SKU on the listing, since the cooler detail is from that guide rather than a guarantee about every listing or bundle.
How to choose between them
- Consider the 8700F if you value its two additional cores, 300 MHz higher maximum boost specification or AMD-listed AI engine, and its local price fits the build.
- Consider the 8400F if it is meaningfully less expensive where you shop and its specifications suit your intended build. The higher base clock alone is not evidence that it will deliver better game performance.
- Compare actual gaming tests made with the graphics card, resolution and games you care about. Without those results and current local prices, neither processor can be called the better-value gaming choice.
AMD lists both models as launched on April 1, 2024. A contemporaneous Tom’s Hardware report dated April 11, 2024 said pricing had not been disclosed at that time. That launch-era note is not current price guidance; check live listings in your region.

One specification difference beyond gaming
AMD’s current 8700F product page lists an AI engine rated up to 16 TOPS, and its May 2024 guide identifies XDNA. This is a manufacturer specification, not an independent performance result. AMD’s 8400F product page and guide do not list an AI engine. This distinction does not change the graphics requirement: the 8700F also needs a discrete graphics card for display output.
