Yes—Microsoft says its next-generation Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, is designed to play both Xbox console games and PC games. The company has also described a custom AMD chip and claimed a major leap in ray tracing. But it has not yet explained which PC games or storefronts will work, published performance benchmarks, or announced a consumer release date. Here is what Microsoft has confirmed—and what remains unknown.
What is Project Helix?
Project Helix is the codename for Microsoft’s next-generation first-party Xbox console. On March 11, 2026, Xbox Vice President Jason Ronald said it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. That is Microsoft’s stated direction for the hardware, not a published compatibility guarantee for every game on either platform.
Microsoft described the system as using a custom AMD system-on-a-chip (SoC), co-designed for next-generation DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). The announcement did not provide a full hardware specification sheet, such as processor details, memory, storage capacity, or retail configurations.
Will Project Helix play PC games?
Microsoft says it is designed to play PC games, but has not specified how that support will work. The announcement does not name supported PC storefronts, explain Windows compatibility, list game-specific requirements, or say that every PC title will run. Until Microsoft publishes those details, “PC games” should be understood as the company’s stated design goal—not as confirmation of universal PC-game or storefront support.

Microsoft separately described Xbox mode for Windows 11 as a full-screen, controller-optimized experience, with rollout planned to begin in April 2026 in select markets. That Windows feature is not evidence that Project Helix runs all Windows games or supports every PC storefront. Microsoft’s Windows announcement concerns Xbox mode, not a Helix compatibility list.
What does Microsoft mean by “leading performance”?
Ronald said Project Helix would deliver “leading performance” and an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability.” He also said the console integrates intelligence into the graphics and compute pipeline and is intended to improve efficiency, scale, and visual ambition.

These are Microsoft’s claims, not independently established benchmark results. In its March 11 announcement, the company did not publish a ray-tracing benchmark, identify the hardware or product used as the comparison baseline, or provide test conditions. There is not yet enough public information to translate “order of magnitude” into a verified comparison for particular games, settings, or frame rates.
When will Project Helix be released?
Microsoft said it plans to begin shipping alpha versions of Project Helix hardware to developers in 2027. Those are developer versions, not consumer units; the timing does not establish a retail launch date. The announcement gives no consumer release date or price.

Will it play older Xbox games?
Microsoft says it is committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years to come. The March 11 announcement does not provide a title-by-title compatibility list or specify exceptions, so it does not confirm that every game from those generations will work on Project Helix.

Microsoft also reported that more than 5,000 developers around the world were building for Xbox. In a separate Xbox Play Anywhere announcement, it cited more than 1,500 games and 500 development teams that had shipped games through the program. Those figures describe Xbox development and Play Anywhere; they do not establish Project Helix compatibility with any particular title.
