Google’s guidance is straightforward: publishers should manually check AI-generated material for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing it. That includes not only article text but also Search-visible metadata such as titles, meta descriptions, structured data, and image alt text. The instruction is an editorial quality directive—not a declaration that using AI automatically violates Google policy or triggers a ranking penalty.

What Google asks publishers to do

Google Search Central says: “It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing.” The page explains that generative models predict likely word sequences from training data rather than retrieve facts, so their outputs can contain inaccuracies, sometimes called hallucinations. Google Search Central’s guidance on generative AI content is the source of this instruction; it does not identify when the specific sentence was added.

For publishers, the practical implication is to treat generated text as draft material, not verified reporting or finished copy. The instruction applies wherever AI-generated content may be published or shown in Search.

Verify the claims, not just the prose

Check factual statements, names, dates, figures, quotations, and links against reliable evidence, preferably primary sources. Open and validate sources cited by an AI system; a plausible-looking citation or quotation is not proof that it is genuine or supports the claim. This is a practical way to carry out Google’s manual-review instruction, rather than a step-by-step checklist prescribed by Google.

Review Search-visible metadata too

Google explicitly includes <title> elements, meta descriptions, structured data, and image alt text in the material publishers should review. Check that these fields accurately describe the page and do not introduce unsupported claims. Structured data should also follow the general and feature-specific guidelines that apply, and its markup should be validated.

Give readers useful context

Google says information about how a piece was created can help readers understand it. Its guidance does not prescribe a universal disclosure format, so publishers should choose context that is clear and appropriate to the work—for example, explaining an AI tool’s role when that information helps readers assess how the article was produced.

What the guidance does not mean

Google’s page emphasizes accuracy, quality, relevance, and usefulness, particularly for automatically generated content. It warns that producing many pages without adding value may violate its scaled content abuse spam policy. It does not say that AI use alone is prohibited, nor does it establish that manual review guarantees rankings, traffic, revenue, or reader trust.

For a broader Search strategy, Google’s 15 May 2026 resource announcement for generative AI in Search says valuable, unique, non-commodity content matters and that established SEO best practices remain foundational. That reinforces the distinction between using AI as a production aid and publishing large volumes of material that offer little to users.

How the UK publisher requirement differs

A separate UK regulatory development concerns how Google uses publishers’ content in its own generative AI Search features. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) imposed a publisher conduct requirement on Google Search on 3 June 2026. The official GOV.UK record of the Google Search publisher conduct requirement was listed as open and last updated on 4 August 2026.

Issue Scope What it requires Geography
Google’s AI-content guidance A publisher’s own AI-generated website content and Search-visible metadata Publishers manually review generated material for accuracy and trustworthiness; Google also emphasizes quality, value, and context. General Google Search guidance; no geographic limitation is stated on the cited page.
CMA publisher conduct requirement Google’s use and presentation of publisher Search content in generative AI features Google must provide publisher controls, clear information, engagement metrics, accurate attribution, and a clear way for users to access content. Google’s general Search services in the UK.

The CMA requirement concerns Google’s treatment of publisher material, not a publisher’s review of its own AI-generated draft. The regulator’s 3 June 2026 announcement says the requirement covers Search AI features such as AI Overviews, gives Google nine months to implement all changes, and requires compliance reports supported by data and metrics. The changes are a rollout subject to reporting and oversight, not a set of controls that the announcement says are already fully implemented.

CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell said the goal was appropriate bargaining power for publishers as AI features reshape search. The requirement is geographically specific to the UK; it should not be presented as a worldwide rule or as the reason for Google’s general editorial guidance.

A practical pre-publication workflow

  1. Identify AI-generated material. Treat it as unverified draft copy, including generated claims or language incorporated into a human-written article.
  2. Check each material claim. Trace facts, numbers, dates, names, quotations, and links to reliable evidence. Confirm that each source exists and says what the draft attributes to it.
  3. Audit the page’s metadata. Review the title element, meta description, structured data, and image alt text for accuracy and consistency with the published page.
  4. Validate structured data. Confirm that it describes the page accurately and complies with the applicable general and feature-specific guidance.
  5. Decide what process context readers need. Explain AI’s role when it helps readers understand how the piece was created; Google does not mandate one disclosure template in this guidance.
  6. Assess whether the page adds value. Do not use automation simply to multiply pages without meaningful user value. Keep the work relevant, useful, and aligned with ordinary SEO fundamentals.
