Xbox Series X|S has the broader documented backward-compatibility reach: it supports Xbox One games plus selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but not PS3 discs. Neither platform guarantees that every older title will work, and “PS5 emulation” is not an established description of Sony’s implementation: Sony describes PS4 games as playable on PS5 without explaining the underlying technology.
What is the difference between PS5 emulation and Xbox backward compatibility?
The clearest difference is how many generations each platform officially covers. Sony’s current support information focuses on PS4 games running on PS5. Microsoft lists Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games for Xbox Series X|S. That gives Xbox the wider documented generation range, but eligibility remains specific to each game.
The terms also need care. Sony says that the overwhelming majority of PS4 games are playable on PS5; its support page does not call the process emulation or describe how it works. Xbox Wire explicitly said in June 2020 that backward-compatible games run natively on Xbox Series X hardware. That is Microsoft’s description of its approach, not evidence that PS5 uses emulation.

Which PS4 games work on PS5?
Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. Its live support page names six PS4-only titles in the list accessed for this article: Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One, Just Deal With It!, Robinson: The Journey, We Sing, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition and Shadwen. Sony says the list can change and excludes demos, media and non-game applications, so check the current page rather than treating the named games as a permanent or exhaustive count.

Sony also warns that some PS4 functions may not be available and that some games may show errors or unexpected behavior on PS5. It recommends trying a game before purchasing add-ons to improve the experience. Select PS4 titles may use Game Boost for a higher or smoother frame rate; that is not a promise that every compatible game runs faster.
At PS5’s October 2020 launch, Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, said that more than 99% of PS4 games would be playable on PS5 on day one. That was a launch-era estimate, not a current measurement of the catalog.

Can PS5 play PS3 games, and can it use PS4 discs?
PS3 games
PS5 does not support PS3 discs, according to Sony’s backward-compatibility support page. Do not assume that a PS3 disc will work simply because PS5 plays most PS4 games.
PS4 discs
A PS4 disc works only with a PS5 console that has a disc drive. Keep the disc inserted while playing; a PS5 Digital Edition cannot read it. Compatible digital PS4 games can instead be installed, transferred over Wi-Fi or accessed from compatible USB storage, as Sony explains on the same support page.

Which Xbox generations work on Xbox Series X|S?
Microsoft lists Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games as backward compatible on Series X|S. “Selected” matters: the list does not mean every title from those generations is available. Xbox directs players to its compatible-games catalog to check a specific game and its supported features.
Microsoft describes backward compatibility as available for games players already own. A compatible digital game can be accessed through the account that owns it. On a disc-drive console, a compatible Xbox disc downloads the game to the console, but the disc must stay in the drive to play. Xbox Series S is digital-only, so it cannot use game discs.

What does “runs natively” mean here?
In June 2020, Xbox Wire said backward-compatible games run natively on Xbox Series X hardware, using its CPU, GPU and SSD. Microsoft connected the newer hardware with potential benefits such as steadier or higher frame rates, supported resolution and visual quality, and shorter loading. This launch-era explanation does not guarantee a particular improvement for every game.

- PS5: Sony says select PS4 games may benefit from Game Boost and run at a higher or smoother frame rate. The support page also cautions that some functionality may be unavailable and behavior can be unexpected.
- Xbox Series X|S: Microsoft lists FPS Boost, which can raise frame rates to nearly double the original in supported titles; increased resolutions up to 4K for selected games; and Auto HDR for supported games originally using standard dynamic range. These are not universal upgrades.
Microsoft reported over 500,000 hours of gameplay testing by its backward-compatibility team in an October 2020 article. That figure describes the company’s stated testing effort in the year before Series X|S launched, not a recurring or current annual total.

How should you check a game before buying or installing?
- Find the exact title in the platform’s current compatibility information. Use Sony’s PS5 compatibility page for PS4 titles and Xbox’s catalog for Xbox titles. Catalogs and eligibility can change.
- Match the game to your ownership format. A PS4 disc needs a PS5 with a drive; a compatible Xbox disc needs a disc-drive Xbox. Digital purchases require access to the account that owns the game.
- Check your console model. PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 discs, and Xbox Series S is digital-only. If the game is on disc, a digital-only console cannot use that disc entitlement.
- Look for title-specific features and caveats. Verify Game Boost, FPS Boost, resolution or HDR support on the game’s listing rather than inferring an enhancement from general platform capabilities.
- Test before spending more on add-ons. Sony specifically advises trying a PS4 game on PS5 before purchasing add-ons intended to improve the experience.
Which console is a better fit for older games?
- Choose PS5 if your priority is your PS4 library. Sony describes compatibility for the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, but check the exact game and remember that PS3 discs are not supported.
- Choose Xbox Series X|S if your priority is access across more Xbox generations. Its documented range includes Xbox One and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Verify each title, and choose a disc-drive model if you rely on physical games.
