Choose the Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022) if you want Alexa to respond hands-free from across the room, built-in Ethernet, or an HDMI input for a compatible set-top box. Choose the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023) if you want a compact device that plugs into your TV and are happy to use its voice remote—or already have a linked Echo for hands-free Alexa. Both offer 4K streaming, Wi-Fi 6E and 16 GB of storage, so those features alone do not settle the choice.
Fire TV Cube vs. Fire TV Stick 4K Max: key differences
This comparison is between the Fire TV Cube 3rd generation, released in 2022, and the Fire TV Stick 4K Max 2nd generation, released in 2023. Amazon also lists a 1st-generation 4K Max Stick from 2021; check the generation on the listing before buying.

Choose the Cube for hands-free Alexa and more connections
You want Alexa without pressing a remote button
The Cube has microphones for native far-field Alexa control, so you can speak to it from across the room. The Stick’s own voice control works through its remote; hands-free Alexa is possible if you link an Echo. The Cube is the more direct choice if you do not already have an Echo and want to ask Alexa to control compatible Fire TV functions without picking up the remote.

You need HDMI input or built-in Ethernet
The Cube’s HDMI input can connect compatible equipment such as a set-top box, and Amazon documents Alexa control for supported set-top boxes. Amazon’s setup instructions say the Cube and connected box need line of sight for this control; it recommends a high-speed HDMI cable rated at 18 Gbps or higher. The Cube also has built-in 10/100 Ethernet, while wired networking on the Stick requires an external adapter.
The Cube’s ports matter only if they fit your setup. For ordinary streaming, neither device requires an added accessory.

Choose the Stick for a compact, straightforward streamer
The Stick plugs into a TV’s HDMI port and includes the same headline streaming basics as the Cube: 4K, Wi-Fi 6E and 16 GB of storage. Its voice remote provides Alexa control without a separate Echo. If you already have a linked Echo, you can use it for hands-free control too.
Unlike the Cube, the Stick has no HDMI input or built-in Ethernet port, and it does not have native far-field Alexa microphones. If you do not need those Cube features, the Stick keeps the streaming device small and simple.

What Wi-Fi 6E, storage and performance do—and do not—tell you
Both devices list Wi-Fi 6E and 16 GB of storage, so neither is the clear choice on those specifications. Wi-Fi 6E’s practical benefit depends on a compatible network and conditions in your home; the specification does not guarantee faster internet or smoother streaming.
Amazon describes the Cube’s octa-core processor as “2X more powerful than the Fire TV Stick 4K Max.” That is Amazon’s own comparison, not a published independent benchmark. It does not establish a particular app-launch time or a general real-world speed advantage.

Alexa Home Theater works with either device, with requirements
Amazon supports Alexa Home Theater with both models. Setup requires a compatible Fire TV device, compatible Echo devices and a TV with HDMI ARC. Amazon’s Alexa Home Theater setup guide directs users to connect the Fire TV device to the TV’s ARC-labeled HDMI port; HDMI-CEC may also need to be enabled. The feature plays audio through Echo devices, but this does not establish compatibility with every soundbar or receiver arrangement.

That depends on local prices and whether you will use its distinctive hardware. The official specifications and setup pages cited here do not establish current prices, discounts or stock, so a universal value verdict would be unreliable. Compare the listings available in your marketplace on the day you buy, and make sure the Stick listing is for the 2nd generation if that is the model you intend to compare.
