FM stations can interfere with each other when competing signals reach a radio on the same or nearby frequencies, but two stations at once does not automatically mean either broadcaster is at fault. Weak coverage, receiver overload or poor selectivity, antenna problems, and nearby electrical devices can produce similar symptoms. The quickest way to narrow down the cause is to compare locations and radios, reposition the antenna, and safely check for local electrical noise before changing equipment.

Why does my FM radio pick up two stations at once?

A radio has to separate the station you want from other signals. If signals on the same or nearby channels compete, the receiver may struggle to lock onto one cleanly. A receiver with limited selectivity can also admit an unwanted nearby signal; an overloaded receiver may behave poorly when a strong signal is present. In some cases, a station seems to appear at another spot on the dial because of a receiver issue called image response. The FCC’s interference handbook excerpt, in its discussion of AM and FM radios, notes that image response can make one station audible at two dial positions.

Not every noisy or overlapping signal is caused by another broadcaster. A weak wanted signal can be overwhelmed, and electromagnetic disturbance from nearby equipment can also affect reception. Ofcom’s guidance on interference to radio equipment describes receiver immunity and selectivity, aerial siting, and nearby apparatus among the factors to consider.

Reception also depends on the transmitter, terrain, buildings and other ground clutter, atmospheric conditions, the receiver’s sensitivity, the aerial’s gain and position, and whether you are listening indoors or in a vehicle. Ofcom’s coverage-planning report describes these factors and notes that FM audio quality degrades progressively as the wanted signal gets weaker or interference increases.

How to diagnose and improve FM reception

  1. Map when and where the problem occurs

Check whether one station or many are affected, whether the problem follows the radio to another place, and whether moving the radio or changing the time changes it. Note whether the issue occurs only in one room or one vehicle. These patterns help distinguish a location or coverage issue from a receiver or local disturbance, but they do not identify the source on their own.

  2. Move the radio and aerial

Try another position, especially near a window or away from obvious electrical equipment. If the aerial is separate, reposition it and keep it away from likely disturbance sources. Ofcom recommends suitable aerial siting and says moving affected equipment can be a simple way to improve reception.

    • Exceptional Performance Indoors: Designed for digital HD radios and home theater setups, offering reliable signal even in urban environments.
  3. Check the aerial and its connection

Make sure the aerial is connected securely, positioned sensibly, and suitable for the radio and installation. For an external wired aerial, inspect the cable and connectors for damage or an unsuitable fit. Ofcom advises using suitable cable and connectors; its advice about double-screened cable applies to co-sited installations, not automatically to every home.

A better-positioned or higher-gain aerial may help if weak signal is the main problem. It will not necessarily solve competing channels, receiver overload, or electrical interference. An amplifier is not a universal fix: strengthening signals can aggravate a receiver-overload problem.

    • This 300 Ohm FM antenna provide a better radio solution for radio stereo receiver on your table top, home, office, garage, basement and so on.
    • Stretch the end of the antenna as far as possible away from the device for the best reception.
    • Fits all receivers with a clip or terminal FM socket. Before placing the order, please make sure your FM socket is the same as what we have mentioned.
    • Package include: 1PCS antenna
  4. Check for nearby electrical disturbance

Where it is safe, switch nearby electrical devices off one at a time and see whether reception improves; turn each device back on after checking it. This can help identify a local source, as Ofcom recommends. Do not open or modify a radio or a mains-powered device as part of consumer troubleshooting.

  5. Compare with another radio

If another receiver is available, try it in the same place with a suitable aerial. If only one radio has trouble, its performance or aerial connection becomes a more plausible cause. If multiple radios share the problem, the location, coverage, or a local disturbance becomes more plausible. This comparison is a clue, not proof.

  6. Get help with fixed or shared aerial systems

If the problem involves a communal aerial, contact the landlord or aerial contractor. In the UK, Ofcom says listeners should check with their service provider and then contact the BBC about interference to terrestrial radio services; exceptions include unlicensed broadcast stations. See Ofcom’s guidance on interference to TV and radio services. Outside the UK, contact the broadcaster, building manager, or national spectrum regulator as appropriate.

Choose a remedy that matches the likely cause

What seems most likely What to try Why it may help—and its limits
Weak signal or poor aerial position Reposition the radio or aerial; consider a suitable external or higher-gain aerial for a fixed installation. A better position or aerial may improve the wanted signal. Check compatibility with the radio and installation; it will not necessarily fix overlap, overload, or local electrical disturbance.
Problem limited to one room or position Move the radio and aerial away from nearby electrical equipment and test another position. Position changes can improve reception or help reveal a local disturbance. They do not establish which device or signal caused the problem.
One receiver struggles while another works in the same place Check the affected radio’s aerial connection and compare its reception in another location. Receiver performance or its connection becomes more plausible, but a comparison alone cannot prove the cause.
Several receivers have the same problem in one location Map where the issue occurs, check for local disturbances, and seek help with a fixed or communal aerial if applicable. Location, coverage, or a disturbance becomes more plausible. An amplifier may worsen overload rather than resolve it.
External wired aerial has a damaged or unsuitable cable or connector Have the cable and connectors checked for suitability and condition. This addresses a possible installation fault; Ofcom’s double-screened cable advice is specifically for co-sited installations.

These are diagnostic approaches, not a ranking of antenna models. The right choice depends on the radio’s connection, the aerial’s intended use and frequency range, and the installation. No single aerial or amplifier can be assumed to cure every form of interference.

When is another station actually at fault?

Hearing overlap is not enough to establish that a station is transmitting improperly. Signals can compete because of coverage and channel conditions, while receiver limitations, poor aerial setup, and local electrical disturbance can create similar effects. The troubleshooting steps above can narrow down the pattern, but they do not determine whether a broadcaster has breached a rule. For a service or installation complaint, use the relevant broadcaster, building manager, or regulator for your location.
