Before paying for a Pokémon TCG preorder, verify who is selling it, what exact product is promised, when it should ship, and whether you can get your money back if something goes wrong. Favor official or independently verifiable sellers, keep payment on the marketplace, and treat unusually low prices or pressure to send a deposit as warning signs—not proof on their own.
What a Pokémon TCG preorder scam can look like
A preorder offer may describe a product the seller does not have or cannot deliver. In a January 2026 bulletin, Singapore ScamShield described buyers paying deposits for Pokémon card preorder listings through PayNow or bank transfer, then finding that the product never arrived or the seller could no longer be reached. ScamShield reported at least S$958,000 lost to e-commerce scams involving Pokémon trading-card sales in Singapore since October 2025. That figure is specific to Singapore, that scam category, and that period; it is not a global loss estimate. ScamShield bulletin, January 2026.
A deposit request is not automatically fraudulent, but an irreversible direct transfer to an unverified seller leaves you with less recourse. Be especially cautious if the seller wants you to leave the platform’s checkout or pay by bank transfer, gift card, cash reload card, cryptocurrency, or wire transfer.
Check the seller and the exact listing before paying
Verify the seller through a channel you can check independently
Start with Pokémon’s official channels or a retailer whose identity and sales channel you can independently confirm. Pokémon Center Support names Pokémon Center, Pokémon automated vending machines, limited-time deals at major retailers, and existing mass-market retail partnerships as places to find Pokémon TCG cards. It does not publish a complete seller whitelist for every country, nor does it certify every third-party marketplace listing. Read recent seller reviews and contact details, preferably checking more than one source. Ask questions through the platform and keep the seller’s reply. A high rating by itself is not proof that a particular preorder is genuine or will be fulfilled.
Make sure the offer describes the product you intend to buy
Check the listing’s full title and description for the product version, language, edition, quantity, release date, shipping estimate, and return terms. Establish whether the seller is taking a preorder or claims to have the item in hand. If the item’s specific condition or existence matters, look for photographs of that item: stock images show what a product is supposed to look like, not that the seller possesses it or that the item is in the described condition.

Compare the packaging against Pokémon’s official product images. Pokémon Support warns that counterfeit products can be difficult to recognize, especially booster packs, and says a pack priced dramatically below suggested retail is a strong warning. Keep payment and messages on-platform
Use the marketplace’s checkout and a payment method with a route to dispute a charge, such as a credit card or a secure buyer-protection system. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Don’t buy from anyone who wants you to pay outside the marketplace’s payment system.” A site using HTTPS is not necessarily a legitimate seller. Review the marketplace’s terms and refund deadlines before you rely on its protections. FTC: Online shopping

Understand what a legitimate Pokémon Center preorder means
Pokémon Center says select merchandise may be available to preorder before release. For Pokémon Center orders, a valid credit card is required; the site may place an authorization hold until the item is ready to ship, with the charge posting when it ships. A canceled preorder is not charged, although a temporary pending authorization may remain until the financial institution releases it. High demand and limited availability do not validate an unrelated seller. Pokémon Support says it is working to increase production and replenish impacted products at participating retailers; Pokémon Center may use a virtual queue during periods of increased traffic. A queue or temporary stock-out can explain difficulty buying through an official channel, but it does not establish that another seller’s preorder is genuine. Use marketplace protections carefully
Protection depends on the platform and its current terms. For example, TCGplayer says its Safeguard covers presale orders that do not arrive or are not as described. Its counterfeit process requires the suspected item to be received by TCGplayer for review, and counterfeit claims must be reported within 30 calendar days of the estimated delivery date under its refund policy. If the order is late, missing, or possibly counterfeit
- Save your records. Keep the listing URL or screenshots, product description, seller identity, order confirmation, shipping information, and messages.
- Contact the seller and marketplace through the original transaction. Use the platform’s process and check its complaint and refund deadlines rather than waiting indefinitely.
- Escalate if the seller does not resolve it. The FTC recommends contacting the marketplace and, when appropriate, the card issuer to dispute a charge. FTC online-shopping guidance
- Follow the platform’s counterfeit procedure. On TCGplayer, that includes submitting the claim with order details and sending the suspected item to TCGplayer for review within its stated reporting period. Other platforms may set different requirements.
How to assess a card or sealed pack that looks fake
A quick visual check cannot conclusively authenticate a Pokémon card or sealed booster pack. Pokémon Support suggests holding a suspect card up to a bright light and asking a shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate it. The same guidance cautions that fake booster packs can be very difficult to discern, so do not treat one at-home check as proof that a sealed pack is genuine. Pokémon Support counterfeit guidance
