Wireless Charging Devices in Green Energy Bag is a 2016 DIY project by Petrache Valentin that put Qi wireless-charging electronics, a power bank and a small solar panel into a notebook bag. It is best understood as a prototype account—not a current product review or a measured demonstration of charging speed or solar performance.

What the green energy bag project is

Valentin published the project on Hackster.io on February 17, 2016. Its aim was to carry a battery and wireless-charging hardware inside a bag, with a solar panel mounted on the outside to recharge the battery. The project page opens with the builder’s line: “What to do when you’re on a rush, in traffic, and you don’t have the right cable? You charge it wireless.” That describes the idea, rather than establishing that every phone can charge wirelessly.

The project was also a third-prize entry in Hackster’s completed Power Without Boundaries contest. Renesas’ March 29, 2016 contest announcement names a green energy bag among the winners and says Digi-Key sponsored the contest. This is historical contest context, not a current product endorsement.

How the wireless charging setup was arranged

The listed core wireless components are an IDT Qi 5W transmitter prototype kit and an IDT Qi 5W receiver prototype kit. The parts list also names a 1000mAh lithium-ion battery component and a solar panel. The 5W and 1000mAh figures are component labels in the project documentation; they are not measured output or verified system capacity.

Valentin says he modified a low-cost power bank, extended its original small solar panel and mounted the panel on the bag. The receiver sat through a pocket, while the bag held the battery, charging hardware and wiring. He used LEDs to indicate charging or battery status and hot glue to mount components. The page does not provide a wiring diagram or measured electrical results sufficient to treat the build as a validated recipe.

Coil alignment and device connection

The author says the transmitter and receiver coils had to line up for charging. He adjusted and sewed pockets to help keep them aligned. He reports that the build charged a Qi smartphone and small tracking devices. Those are observations about his setup, not independent compatibility testing or a guarantee for other devices.

Valentin also notes that his own phone did not have wireless charging; he connected it to the receiver with a micro-USB lead. That workaround is specific to his build and should not be confused with a phone receiving Qi power directly.

What the project did—and did not—establish

The page is a builder’s account, not a lab test. It does not quantify real-world charging speed, solar yield, or usable battery capacity. In particular, it jokes about the power bank’s stated “80000 mAh” rating (“yeah Right”); that number is explicitly treated skeptically and is not a reliable capacity figure.

The author describes the solar panel as “not very powerful” and says a larger panel would make the bag heavier. He also reports that the power bank required pressing a button to start working, and that visible wiring and pocket placement needed refinement. These practical shortcomings help explain the prototype’s trade-offs, but the project does not report measurements that would let readers calculate charging time or energy gained from sunlight.

What to check before attempting a similar build

The project is useful as a concept, but its 2016 parts list does not establish that the same prototype kits remain available or suitable today. Treat components as categories to investigate, not as a verified current bill of materials.

  • Qi compatibility and alignment: Check that the transmitter and receiver support the intended devices, and plan how the coils will stay aligned when a phone is placed in the bag.
  • Power requirements: Confirm the modules’ input requirements and actual output specifications rather than relying on a kit’s nominal label.
  • Battery capacity: Compare a battery’s verified watt-hour rating and protection features. Do not infer usable capacity from an unsupported headline mAh claim.
  • Solar expectations: Check the panel’s rated output and consider how much direct sun it is likely to receive while carried. A small panel should not be assumed to replenish a power bank quickly.
  • Weight and construction: Account for the panel, battery, modules and wiring, and secure components so they are protected in normal bag use.
  • Activation and safety: Check whether the power bank starts automatically or needs a button press, and follow the battery and module makers’ safety guidance for assembly and use.

A sensible search phrase for the wireless parts category is “Qi wireless charging transmitter receiver module kit.” The named IDT kits are prototype components documented in a 2016 project; current availability and compatibility with substitute modules are not established here.

How this differs from other solar bags

The Hackster project combines a solar-charged battery with Qi wireless charging. Other products and concepts described as solar bags may use sunlight and a built-in power bank for portable electronics, or may focus on lighting. For example, the Jyoty Solar Power solar energy bag description is a vendor’s account of a product category, while MIT Solve’s Eco Solarbag profile describes a school-bag concept using recycled material, a flexible solar panel and a battery for lighting. Neither source establishes that those bags provide Qi wireless charging.

Historical contest statement

In Renesas’ 2016 announcement, IDT vice president and chief sales officer Mario Montana said: “IDT is the leader in providing wireless power semiconductors for top smartphone makers and other global brands, but, as we’ve seen through this contest, electronics developers don’t need a top-tier pedigree to integrate wireless power into their designs.” This was a corporate statement in the contest announcement, not an independent assessment of the bag’s performance.
