A DIY digital watch can be as simple as a small display, a microcontroller, buttons, and a real-time clock—or it can grow into a Wi-Fi-connected device with multiple screens. Choose the functions and case size first, then select parts that match. This guide compares three documented build approaches and an integrated watch kit, with practical checks for displays, timekeeping, power, and assembly.
Choose the kind of watch you want to build
A basic watch displays the time; a smartwatch-style project adds features such as weather or timers and may rely on Wi-Fi. Those are different design goals, not just different firmware choices. A compact, offline build can use a dedicated real-time clock (RTC), while a connected design can synchronize its time over the network.
Before buying parts, decide what the watch must do, how you will interact with it, and how much room the case allows. A larger screen or extra components can make the design harder to package on a wrist. The examples below come from separate projects: their parts are not automatically interchangeable.
Compare four DIY digital watch routes
| Route | Documented configuration | Useful if… | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discrete Arduino build | Arduino Pro Mini 3V, 0.91-inch 128×32 I2C OLED, DS3231 RTC, tactile buttons, 500 mAh LiPo, and TP4056 charger module. The guide also lists a multimeter and soldering kit. Project guide | You want to choose and wire separate modules. | Board, display, RTC, charger, battery, and case must work together electrically and physically. Expect more wiring and soldering than with an integrated board. |
| XIAO ESP32C3 with expansion board | The expansion board is described as including an OLED, RTC, SD card slot, buzzer, and integrated Li-ion charging circuit; the project uses the OLED and RTC over I2C. Project guide | You want several peripherals on one expansion platform. | Confirm the board’s dimensions, connector layout, and which included peripherals you will actually use. |
| ESP32-C6 smartwatch-style interface | NULA Mini ESP32-C6, 0.96-inch 128×64 SSD1306 OLED, and a momentary button; USB-C is used for power and programming. A small LiPo battery and charger are optional for wearable use. The repository describes clock, weather, and timer screens with NTP synchronization. Project repository | You want a connected interface and are comfortable with a broader firmware scope. | Decide whether Wi-Fi features justify the added design and power considerations, and establish a suitable battery and charging setup for the exact board. |
| Integrated watch kit | T-Watch Standard documentation describes an ESP32 core PCB and backplane, a 1.54-inch LCD touch screen, and a kit configuration that includes a lithium battery. T-Watch documentation | You prefer a purpose-built platform over sourcing every module separately. | Check current availability, firmware support, enclosure suitability, and whether the platform meets your intended features. |
These sources do not provide a controlled comparison of total cost, build time, or reliability, so the table is a comparison of documented configurations—not a ranking.

Match the display, board, and case
Display size and resolution affect readability and enclosure layout. The discrete Arduino example uses a 0.91-inch 128×32 OLED; the ESP32-C6 project uses a 0.96-inch 128×64 SSD1306 OLED. Before ordering, verify the exact module’s dimensions, resolution, bus/interface, and voltage requirements against the board and case. Similar product names do not guarantee compatible pinouts or physical fit.
If sourcing parts, “0.96 inch SSD1306 OLED display I2C” is a concrete search phrase tied to the ESP32-C6 example. A DS3231 RTC module is listed in the Arduino build. Treat those as starting points, not universal recommendations: check the particular module documentation and enclosure clearances.

Plan timekeeping and firmware
RTC-based clock
The Arduino project lists a DS3231 RTC and uses an RTC library in its code. An RTC is a dedicated timekeeping component, so this route does not depend on network connectivity to provide a time source. The cited project information does not quantify accuracy, backup behavior, or power trade-offs; consult the exact component documentation for those details.
Network-synchronized clock
The ESP32-C6 repository describes NTP synchronization over Wi-Fi and example HOME, CLOCK, WEATHER, and TIMER screens, with a single-button interaction pattern. Its setup notes describe using the Arduino IDE with the ESP32 core and Adafruit display libraries. These are documented features of that example, not an independent assessment of usability or battery performance.

- 【SOLDER PROJECT WITH STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTION GUIDE】Includes a detailed instruction manual to support the assembly process. This electronics project is suitable for program activities, workshops, clubs, and independent learning for beginners, and electronics enthusiasts.
Pick the timekeeping method alongside the feature set. A connected design needs connectivity for network synchronization; an RTC-based design instead requires the RTC hardware and suitable firmware. The available project descriptions do not establish a comparable accuracy or energy-use result between the approaches.
Design the battery and charger as one subsystem
The Arduino example lists a 500 mAh LiPo with a TP4056 charger module, while the XIAO expansion board is described as having integrated Li-ion charging. These are distinct configurations, not evidence that a standalone charger and an integrated charging board can be substituted freely.

- Confirm the board’s logic-voltage requirements and the battery’s connector and polarity.
- Check the selected charger’s requirements and compatibility with the specific battery and board.
- Make sure the battery and all boards fit inside the planned case without stressing wires or connectors.
- Follow the current documentation for the exact hardware revision rather than assuming parts from different projects match.
No comparable, independently supported battery-life measurement is established for these builds. A listed capacity or feature set is not a runtime estimate; measure the completed design under the conditions in which you plan to use it.
Assemble and check the prototype before making a case
- Define the feature and size limits. Decide whether you need only a clock or also connected screens, and measure the space available for the display, board, controls, battery, and wiring.
- Select one documented architecture. Use a discrete Arduino, an integrated XIAO expansion board, an ESP32-C6 interface, or a supported watch kit as the basis. Do not mix their parts lists without checking each interface and power requirement.
- Verify every connection and dimension. Check the display bus and voltage, RTC or expansion-board connections, button input, battery polarity, charger requirements, and case clearance using the selected hardware’s documentation.
- Build and program on the bench. Assemble the electronics before finalizing the enclosure. For the ESP32-C6 example, follow its repository’s Arduino IDE setup and library instructions; other routes require firmware appropriate to their own boards and modules.
- Test the intended functions. Confirm that the display updates, buttons behave as intended, and the clock obtains time from its selected source. For a connected build, check the network-dependent functions; for an RTC build, verify the RTC integration.
- Check fit and power behavior in the actual configuration. Test the chosen battery and charger with the assembled design, then confirm the components and wiring fit the case. Do not assume water resistance or long-term reliability without evidence for the finished enclosure and build.
What to expect—and what the examples do not establish
The documented routes show that a wrist-worn digital display can be built from discrete modules, an expansion board, a connected ESP32 project, or an integrated kit. They do not establish a universal parts list, expected runtime, total project cost, waterproofing, or long-term reliability. Current stock, product revisions, and kit support can change, so verify those details with the relevant project or product documentation before purchase.
