It does not build objects by depositing layers like a conventional 3D printer: instead, its feedstock already includes motor modules, and the machine shapes the strip by folding it. In a 2017 proof of concept, researchers demonstrated three moving designs—a crawler, a roller and a pipe-traverser.
What “1D printing” means
The “1D” refers to the input: a long, linear strip. The printer bends and folds that strip into a three-dimensional structure rather than building one up from successive layers. The feedstock is not bare aluminum wire. It is a prepared strip with motor modules embedded at fixed intervals, which supply a key part of the resulting robots’ functionality.
The approach was presented as a proof of concept by Daniel Cellucci, Robert MacCurdy, Hod Lipson and Sebastian Risi in a 2017 research paper published in IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters, volume 2, issue 4, pages 1964–1971. See the paper’s publication record and DOI.
How the printer makes a robot
The researchers used an evolutionary computational method to generate the strip’s fold pattern and motor-control parameters for particular movement goals. The machine then folded the prepared strip into the selected shape. In the reported examples, the source was two meters long and had 87 segments, with two motor modules embedded at fixed intervals. Folding that design took approximately 13 minutes, according to the authors.

That time describes the particular prototype and design in the paper; it is not a general production-speed figure for other designs or systems.
Three robots, each built for a different movement task

The authors report that all three designs were physical robots capable of specialized locomotion tasks. The result is meaningful as a demonstration that one prepared source material can produce distinct moving forms, but the paper characterizes their functionality as modest. It does not establish general-purpose autonomous robots or readiness for everyday deployment.

Can the aluminum strip be reused?
Yes. After a robot has been used, the strip can be straightened and fed back through the printer to make a different design; the motor modules remain attached. The authors also explain a limit: repeated bending cold-works the aluminum, eventually making it brittle enough to fracture. They estimate roughly 10¹ to 10² reuse cycles before failure under the conditions discussed in the paper. That is an order-of-magnitude estimate, not a guaranteed service life.

The device is not an unconstrained robot factory. The paper describes limits on cantilever length and folding geometry, and notes that material properties affect the length and complexity of structures the system can make. Its demonstration also depends on a prepared feedstock strip with integrated motor modules; the results do not show that arbitrary aluminum wire can be loaded and turned into a working robot.

Likewise, potential uses in places such as space or disaster areas are envisioned applications, not field deployments demonstrated by this study. The paper establishes an experimental fabrication method and three specialized locomotion examples—not a commercially available printer, consumer kit or complete manufacturing system.
