Build a home kit with several days of supplies, then pack a smaller go-bag with essentials you can take if you evacuate. FEMA’s hurricane checklist calls for at least three days of water and non-perishable food and at least one week of medications. Use those as starting points, scale supplies to your household, and follow local emergency officials’ directions.
What should your hurricane emergency kit include?
Assemble supplies in practical groups so you can check what you have and spot gaps. FEMA’s hurricane checklist says to keep your family’s unique needs in mind; its quantities are a baseline, not a guarantee that every household has enough.
Water and food
- Store at least a three-day supply of water and non-perishable food, the baseline in FEMA’s 2020 hurricane checklist. Increase the amount for each household member and account for individual needs.
- Include a manual can opener if you store canned food.
Information, light, and charging
- Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio that can receive NOAA Weather Radio alerts, plus spare batteries.
- Pack a flashlight and batteries.
- Keep a charged phone and a compatible power bank or other charging option. Write down important family, work, school, doctor, and emergency contacts in case phones cannot be used.
Medical needs
- Pack a first aid kit and prescription medications. FEMA’s hurricane checklist recommends at least one week of medications where possible; include copies of prescriptions.
- Add extra eyeglasses or contact lenses and supplies.
- If anyone relies on medical equipment or assistive technology, plan for backup batteries or power with the equipment provider or clinician.
Sanitation and basic tools
- Include soap or disinfectant, hand sanitizer, paper towels or moist towelettes, toilet paper, garbage bags and ties, and bleach where appropriate.
- Add a whistle, dust mask, plastic sheeting, duct tape, a non-sparking wrench or pliers, and local maps.
Documents, cash, and clothing
- Gather copies of photo identification, insurance and property records, and key medical and financial information. Put paper copies in a waterproof portable container and keep password-protected digital copies as well.
- Include cash and cards, sturdy shoes, extra clothing, and blankets or sleeping bags.
Children and pets
- If relevant, pack infant formula, diapers, and other supplies your child needs.
- Pack pet food, water, and other pet supplies. FEMA’s 2025 National Preparedness Month toolkit suggests a seven-day supply of pet food and water; adjust for your pets and circumstances.
How do you assemble a separate evacuation go-bag?
Keep a smaller portable set of critical supplies and documents ready to take with you, separate from the fuller kit intended for home. Prioritize items you would need immediately away from home: identification and essential records, medications and prescription copies, phone and charging option, contacts, water and food, basic first aid and hygiene supplies, and household-specific items for children, pets, or medical equipment. Store the bag where household members can reach it quickly.
FEMA’s general emergency-kit guidance also recommends smaller portable kits in places where household members spend time. Keep those kits suited to the location and the people who may need them.

How should you tailor the kit to your household?
- Count everyone: Scale water, food, medication, and other consumables to the number of people and the length of time you may need them.
- Plan around health needs: Confirm medication, equipment power, backup batteries, and mobility or assistive-technology requirements with the relevant clinician or equipment provider.
- Include dependents and pets: Add the particular food, supplies, and care items each child or animal needs.
- Make records usable: Keep paper copies protected from water and digital copies password-protected. Make the portable copies easy to take if evacuation is ordered.
What should you do beyond packing the kit?
A supply kit does not replace an evacuation or shelter plan. Know your evacuation zone and route, make an emergency communication plan, and keep important documents dry and safe. Follow local officials’ instructions. FEMA’s hurricane information sheet says, “Evacuate immediately if ordered to do so.” If you are not evacuating, shelter indoors away from windows and doors.
Do not walk or drive through floodwater. If using a generator, operate it outdoors and at least 20 feet from windows, doors, or garages. FEMA also notes that standard insurance policies do not cover flooding; review your policy and any additional coverage needs for your location.
