In the U.S., many services called robo-advisers have largely relied on predefined, rules-based models—not necessarily generative AI or a chatbot. Typically, you answer questions about your finances and goals; the service uses those answers to recommend or manage a portfolio within its own scope.
What “AI financial advisor” can mean
The phrase covers different products and features, not one standard system. A conventional robo-adviser is an automated digital investment advisory program. FINRA says platforms commonly called robo-advisers have largely used rules-based models. Separately, securities firms are exploring AI for tasks such as brokerage account management, portfolio management, and trading. Those broader experiments do not establish that any particular consumer-facing adviser uses generative AI.
So, ask what the service actually does: Does it select a portfolio from set options, automate investment tasks, answer questions with a chatbot, or combine software with human advice? A provider’s “AI-powered” description does not answer that by itself. FINRA’s 2026 oversight report says existing securities laws and FINRA rules continue to apply when firms use generative AI or similar technologies; its discussion of human oversight is not a promise that a person checks every customer recommendation.
How automated investment advice usually works
- You provide information. An online questionnaire commonly asks about goals, investment horizon, income, other assets, and risk tolerance. The SEC describes this as a typical robo-adviser intake process.
- The program maps your answers to an approach. Its investment methodology and available investment choices determine the recommendation or portfolio. Different providers can offer different portfolios and features.
- The service may carry out defined tasks. Depending on the account and provider, software may place trades, rebalance a portfolio, reinvest, or handle other specified investment tasks. Do not assume every tool automatically trades or manages an account.
- Your results depend on the fit and execution. Incomplete or inaccurate answers, the program’s assumptions and scope, and how the service implements its approach can all affect the output. A recommendation is not a guarantee of a particular investment result.
The SEC’s Investor Bulletin: Robo-Advisers (February 23, 2017) puts the basic exchange plainly: “A robo-adviser uses information you provide to create a recommendation.” The crucial qualification is that the recommendation reflects the information and choices the particular service uses.

What the software can miss
An automated tool can only account for circumstances it asks about, receives, and incorporates. The SEC warns that a tool may rely on assumptions that turn out to be wrong, consider only a limited set of investments (potentially including affiliated investments), or fail to assess all relevant circumstances. Relevant details may include your age, financial situation and needs, investment experience, existing holdings, tax situation, cash needs, time horizon, and goals.
This makes questionnaire accuracy a practical issue, not a formality. If your finances change, check whether and how you must update the service. A tool that does not request or account for a relevant fact may produce an output that does not suit your situation. Automated advice also does not remove market risk, guarantee better returns, or necessarily cost less overall.

Human help, fees, and what is included
Human interaction varies by service. Some robo-advisers offer access to investment professionals; others provide technical support without investment-professional access. Where professional help exists, access may be limited by channel, number of meetings, account size, or an additional fee. Before enrolling, determine whether you can speak with someone qualified to discuss investments, how follow-up works, and who is responsible for updating changed information.
The SEC says robo-advisers often seek to offer lower costs and sometimes lower account minimums, but the total cost matters. Look beyond an advisory fee to costs associated with the investments used and any other applicable charges. Provider features and prices can change, so confirm current terms in the provider’s disclosures.

How to evaluate a service before signing up
Compare services against the same questions rather than relying on an “AI” label. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin recommends understanding what information a robo-adviser uses, what services it provides, how much human interaction matters to you, and how it is compensated.
- Investment method and choices: What approach does it use, and which investments can it select? Does it limit the menu or use affiliated investments?
- Information and updates: What does the intake ask? How can you correct answers or report a change in income, goals, holdings, cash needs, or tax circumstances?
- Account terms: What account types can you open, and are there eligibility rules or minimums?
- Tasks and tax features: Does the service only recommend, or does it trade and rebalance? What does any tax feature do, and what does it not guarantee?
- All-in costs: What is the advisory fee, and what investment-level or other charges may also apply?
- Human access: Is investment-professional help available, through which channels, under what limits, and at what cost?
- Firm identity and record: Who operates the service, and what do its registration and disclosures show?
Check a U.S. adviser’s registration and disclosures
In the United States, robo-advisers are subject to securities laws applicable to investment advisers registered with the SEC or state regulators. You can use the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) database to check registration or licensing status and disciplinary history, and review Form ADV for information about the firm’s business and services. Check an affiliated broker as relevant. Registration is a due-diligence fact, not evidence that a service is suitable for you.

The SEC, NASAA, and FINRA have also warned that purported AI and emerging-technology investment schemes can involve fraud. AI-generated information, including chatbot conversations, can mislead people and contribute to impulsive or poorly informed decisions. Verify who operates a service and its registration; do not treat AI branding, confident chatbot answers, or polished claims as proof of legitimacy or quality.
