NeuroPi HAT was a historical product teaser from Korean AI company Nepes, describing a Raspberry Pi add-on with two NM500 neuromorphic chips. The announcement presented the board as “coming soon,” but did not confirm a price. Current availability, support, compatible Raspberry Pi models and the board’s final product status are not established.

What the NeuroPi HAT announcement described

In a historical report, Hackster.io described Nepes as developing a board that would connect to a Raspberry Pi through its 40-pin GPIO header. The proposed NeuroPi HAT was to carry two NM500 chips. The report did not establish which Raspberry Pi models the board would support. Read the Hackster.io report.

The announcement is best understood as a teaser, not proof that a finished board reached retail. Hackster said the HAT was “coming soon” and that pricing had not been confirmed at the time. Current sales, software support and product status remain unverified.

What an NM500 was reported to do

Hackster described each NM500 as containing 576 “neurons” and 256 bytes of memory. The report said multiple chips could be chained in finished designs, though it did not provide a detailed NeuroPi HAT software workflow or implementation guide.

Hackster relayed Nepes’ claim that one 576-neuron NM500 could perform 100,000 pattern-recognition calculations per second in a power envelope measured in milliwatts. That is a company performance claim reported by the publication, not an independently verified NeuroPi HAT benchmark. The report gives no precise power figure or test protocol.

What neuromorphic processing could mean for a Pi project

Neuromorphic hardware is designed around computing approaches inspired by neural systems. In the NeuroPi announcement, the practical pitch was to add pattern-recognition capability without relying only on conventional general-purpose processing. That does not make the board a universal accelerator: the usefulness and speed of a neuromorphic chip depend on whether a task fits the hardware and its software tools.

C4Labs Zebra Sense Hat Case Kit-for the Raspberry Pi 3B+ or 4B and Sense Hat-Black Ice
  • Fits both Raspberry Pi 3B+ or the Raspberry Pi 4B (not included). Do not use the Pi 4B without a fan shim!
  • Provides access to joystick and buttons on Sense Hat (not included)
  • Inner layers provide room for Pimoroni Fan Shim (not included).
  • Rubber feet and Stainless steel hardware included. GPIO access. No Heatsinks.
  • Designed and Crafted by Local Artists in Tacoma, WA USA

Hackster also cautioned that some workloads suited to ordinary computers may not suit neuromorphic processing. The report described a demonstration involving an earlier NeuroShield—not the NeuroPi HAT—in which one NM500 and additional “Brick” modules accelerated computer vision intended to help optimize harvesting ripe coffee beans. That example illustrates a separate Nepes system and should not be read as a test result for the proposed HAT.

GPIO connection does not establish formal HAT compliance

A board that connects to a Raspberry Pi’s 40-pin GPIO header is not necessarily a formally compliant HAT. Raspberry Pi’s HAT material sets electrical, EEPROM, connector and mechanical requirements. The historical NeuroPi account mentions the GPIO connection but does not establish that the proposed board met each requirement. See the Raspberry Pi add-on boards and HATs repository.

Waveshare Sense HAT (B) for Raspberry Pi Onboard Multi Powerful Sensors Supports External Sensors
  • The Sense HAT (B) is specially designed for Raspberry Pi, integrates multi powerful sensors such as gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer, barometer, temperature and humidity sensor, etc. It is communicated via I2C interface, and allows to connect more external sensors if you need.
  • Trying to make the Pi become a robot that can detect movement and orientation? Or using the Pi to collect environmental temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure data? This HAT would be your ideal choice.
  • Standard Raspberry Pi 40PIN GPIO extension header, supports Raspberry Pi series boards Onboard ICM20948 (3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope, and 3-axis magnetometer), detects movement, orientation, and magnetic
  • Onboard SHTC3 digital temperature and humidity sensor, allows monitoring the environment Onboard LPS22HB barometric pressure sensor, allows monitoring the environment Onboard TCS34725 color sensor, identifies the color of nearby object
  • Onboard ADS1015 ADC, 4-ch 12-bit precision, AD expansion to support more external sensors Brings I2C control pins, for connecting other host boards like STM32 Comes with development resources and manual (examples for Raspberry Pi/STM32)

For anyone evaluating a board described as a HAT, check both the exact Pi model compatibility and whether the vendor documents the applicable HAT specification. Neither is confirmed for NeuroPi in the cited announcement.

NeuroPi also names an unrelated EEG project

A 2024 research paper uses the name NeuroPi for a different project: a portable steady-state visually evoked potential brain-computer interface. That system uses EEG signals, OpenBCI acquisition hardware and a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B; it is not Nepes’ neuromorphic HAT. The paper, published August 6, 2024, reports a small evaluation with one healthy 23-year-old volunteer and tests involving 8- and 16-electrode scenarios. Its findings and limitations concern that BCI system, not the HAT. Read the 2024 NeuroPi BCI paper.

What remains unknown about the HAT

  • Whether the proposed board reached commercial release or is currently available.
  • Its retail price, support arrangements and software ecosystem.
  • Which Raspberry Pi models it was designed to support.
  • Whether it met all formal Raspberry Pi HAT requirements.
  • How the finished board performs on real workloads, and how much power it uses under a specified test.

Those gaps matter more than the chip’s headline calculation figure when deciding whether a board suits a project. A meaningful evaluation would need current availability, documented compatibility, software support, workload-specific independent performance and energy measurements, and price.
