Moderate spoilers: this guide reveals who is attacking the Redanian wagons and the contract’s main decision. In brief, Geralt can kill the Scoia’tael, leave them alone, or promise to keep their secret and later break that promise.
What is the Woodland Beast contract really about?
Woodland Beast is a Witcher contract in Velen near the Border Post. Captain Felix Grubb posts a bounty after Redanian transport wagons are attacked, and the job initially appears to be a monster hunt. As Geralt investigates the scene and follows tracks, he discovers that Scoia’tael—not a beast—are responsible. The group is identified with the commander Vernossiel. The quest reference frames this mismatch as the choice at the heart of the contract: fulfill the captain’s demand or let the attackers go.

What choices can you make?
| Route | What Geralt does | Immediate outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Kill the Scoia’tael | Fight the group and fulfill the captain’s demand. On the route where Geralt meets the commander and agrees to kill them, the objectives also involve recovering his weapons before returning for the reward; gathering squirrel tails is listed as evidence. | Geralt completes the contract for the captain. Do not assume an exact coin amount or inventory result from the quest description alone. |
| Let them go | Leave the Scoia’tael alive rather than carry out the captain’s demand. | The journal records that Geralt leaves them be. A Letter of Safe Conduct and other loot are associated with this outcome context, but the available references do not establish a complete, definitive reward comparison. |
| Promise secrecy, then betray them | Promise not to reveal the Scoia’tael’s secret, then change course and betray that promise. | This is a distinct journal outcome: it is not the same as deciding to fight the group from the outset. |
For the kill route, follow the quest objectives as they appear: the weapons-retrieval step applies to the route described above, rather than to every possible approach. The reference material does not establish enough detail to compare every item or payment across all routes.
Does the decision affect the rest of the game?
The documented consequences are centered on this contract: Geralt’s immediate actions, the journal outcome, and the contract’s reward context. The references do not establish a major effect on the main ending or later story arcs, so treat this as a local moral and contract decision rather than a confirmed campaign-wide branch.

#1 Best Overall
- 1205504
- High-quality material
- Durable
- robustness
The quest reference says the Scoia’tael leave their camp after the contract, either on their own or apparently following a Redanian ambush depending on the outcome. Because that account presents the ambush detail as uncertain, it should not be read as a guaranteed consequence of a particular choice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which option should you choose?
- Choose the kill route if Geralt’s priority is honoring the contract and Captain Grubb’s demand.
- Let them go if Geralt’s priority is sparing the Scoia’tael once he learns who they are.
- Promise and betray only if you want the separate role-play outcome of breaking a promise after making it.
There is no supported basis here for choosing one route to secure a particular ending or a fully specified set of rewards. Pick according to how you want Geralt to respond to the discovery that the supposed monster hunt is actually a conflict with the Scoia’tael.
