To use a bare, HD44780-compatible LCD 1602 with Arduino, wire it in four-bit mode, connect its contrast pin (VO) to a potentiometer, then initialize the LiquidCrystal library with lcd.begin(16, 2). The example below follows Arduino’s documented pin map; other suitable pins work if the wiring and code agree.

Check which kind of LCD 1602 you have

“LCD 1602” refers to a character display with 16 columns and two rows. The instructions here are for a bare parallel-interface module compatible with the Hitachi HD44780 controller. Arduino’s LiquidCrystal library example supports displays compatible with that controller.

If your display has an I2C backpack attached, it uses a different interface and wiring path. Use the backpack’s own documentation and instructions; the parallel pin map below does not apply, and the cited Arduino examples do not establish one universal I2C address or library.

Wire the bare display to Arduino

With the Arduino board disconnected from power, follow the labels on your particular LCD module. Pin order can vary, so do not rely on physical position alone. Arduino’s documented four-bit example uses these connections:

  • 1602 LCD screen can display 2 lines x 16 characters, with i2c serial interface, blue display.
  • Built-in independent potentiometer, backlight can be adjusted through the back potentiometer.
  • Power supply: 5v; I2C address: 0x27; wiring method: GND—GND, VCC—VCC, SDA—A4, SCL—A5.
  • Compatible with most development boards, such as Arduino, Raspberry pi, Tinkerboard, Nano pi, Banana pi, stm32, etc.
  • Widely used in: Internet of Things, school electronics projects, smart buildings, maker DIY projects, etc., can display letters, characters, numbers, real-time clock or temperature.
LCD signal Arduino connection
RS Digital pin 12
Enable (E) Digital pin 11
D4 Digital pin 5
D5 Digital pin 4
D6 Digital pin 3
D7 Digital pin 2
R/W Ground
VSS Ground
VCC 5V, as shown in Arduino’s example
VO (contrast) Potentiometer wiper; connect the potentiometer’s two ends to 5V and ground

Arduino’s example specifies a 10K or 100K potentiometer for contrast. It uses data lines D4–D7, not all eight data lines. The example does not specify backlight wiring: check the module’s markings or manufacturer documentation for its A/K or LED pins, voltage, current, and any resistor requirement.

GeeekPi 2-Pack I2C 1602 LCD Display Module 16X2 Character Serial Blue Backlight LCD Module for Raspberry Pi Arduino STM32 DIY Maker Project Nanopi BPI Tinker board Electrical IoT Internet of Things
  • Use the i2c protocol to reduce the occupation of I/O ports, making it easier to add to the project, and less wiring is more beautiful.
  • Commonly used in: Internet of things, DIY project, home animation, smartbuilding, maker's DIY project.
  • Compatible with all current development boards, such as Arduino, Raspberry pi, Tinkerboard, Nano pi, Banana pi, stm32 and so on
  • With a potentiometer used to adjust backlight (Color: Blue) and contrast.Power supply: 5v and I2C address is: 0x27 Module dimension: 80mm x 35mm x 11mm
#include <LiquidCrystal.h>

const int rs = 12, en = 11, d4 = 5, d5 = 4, d6 = 3, d7 = 2;
LiquidCrystal lcd(rs, en, d4, d5, d6, d7);

void setup() {
  lcd.begin(16, 2);
  lcd.print("hello, world!");
}

void loop() {
  lcd.setCursor(0, 1);
  lcd.print(millis() / 1000);
}

The constructor arguments must be in this order: RS, Enable, D4, D5, D6, D7. If you used different Arduino pins, change the corresponding values in the constructor. lcd.begin(16, 2) sets the display dimensions. lcd.print() writes text, and lcd.setCursor(0, 1) places the cursor at the first column of the second row; both coordinates start at zero. In this sketch, the second row shows the number of seconds since the board started.

Troubleshoot a blank or incorrect display

  1. Check power and ground. Verify the module’s VSS, VCC, and ground connections against its documentation.
  2. Match the sketch to the wiring. Confirm RS, Enable, and each D4–D7 wire goes to the Arduino pin listed in the constructor.
  3. Adjust contrast. Turn the potentiometer connected to VO; an unsuitable contrast setting can make text hard to see.
  4. Check the display dimensions. Use lcd.begin(16, 2) for a 16-column, two-row display.
  5. Check the interface. If the display has an I2C backpack, follow its documented wiring and software instructions instead of this parallel pin map.
  6. Consult the module details for its backlight. The Arduino example does not specify universal backlight voltage, current, or resistor requirements.
