Treat weather resistance as extra protection—not a promise that the camera is waterproof. For sustained rain, manufacturer guidance recommends using a cover even with some weather-resistant cameras.
Before the event: prepare the camera and cover
- Check your camera and lens manuals. Water-resistance claims and limits vary by model and lens combination. For example, Canon describes the EOS R50 as not waterproof, while Panasonic’s GH5M2 guidance says splash resistance applies in conjunction with designated lenses. Do not assume another model shares those limits or protections. See the Canon EOS R50 handling precautions and Panasonic LUMIX GH5M2 before-use guidance.
- Choose and test a camera rain cover. Check that it fits your body-and-lens combination, covers exposed areas, and leaves you able to operate the controls you need. Manufacturer guidance supports using a rain cover, but the cited sources do not compare cover models or verify specific compatibility. Panasonic recommends an optional cover to prevent water from splashing on or entering a camera in rain or snow; see its AK-HC5000G/AK-HC5000GS operating instructions.
- Close all covers and caps. Secure the battery and memory-card doors, terminal covers, socket caps, and other protective covers before heading out.
- Pack a clean, dry cloth. Keep it somewhere accessible so you can wipe droplets from the camera without opening a wet bag or compartment.
During the event: keep rain away from openings
- Use the rain cover while it is raining, especially during prolonged exposure. Ricoh Imaging recommends a rain cover for continuous rain use with the weather-resistant PENTAX KF and warns that prolonged wetting can allow water to enter; see its PENTAX KF FAQ.
- Keep doors and caps shut. Avoid changing the battery or card, or connecting accessories, where rain can reach an open compartment or port.
- Wipe droplets from exposed surfaces when practical, using the clean, dry cloth. A cover or weather-resistant body reduces exposure but cannot guarantee that water will not get inside.
After rain exposure: dry the exterior and follow model guidance
Wipe visible droplets from the camera with a clean, dry cloth, then follow the care instructions for your specific model. Canon’s EOS R50 guidance says to contact a Canon Service Center if the camera gets wet. Do not treat wiping the exterior as proof that moisture has not entered the body.
Why weather resistance is not waterproofing
Manufacturer descriptions set limits, not a blanket guarantee for every camera or situation. Canon says the EOS R6 V is dust- and drip-resistant, not waterproof, and that water cannot be kept out in every circumstance; see its EOS R6 V handling precautions. Panasonic likewise cautions that splash resistance does not guarantee protection from damage after direct contact with water. Ricoh’s advice to use a rain cover during continuous rain is a practical reminder that even a weather-resistant design has limits.
Rain covers are a protective accessory, not a guarantee against water damage. Their fit, coverage, and access to controls are practical checks to make before relying on one at an event.
