For a distant subject, start in your phone’s regular Photo mode, select a native telephoto lens or optical zoom step if your camera offers one, tap the subject to focus, and steady the phone. Use more light whenever possible. If the subject is moving and your phone offers manual controls, choose a faster shutter; for a still subject in dim light, Night mode or a longer exposure may help, but stabilize the phone.
There is no single best zoom ratio or set of settings for every phone. Lens choices, focus limits, stabilization and manual controls vary by model, so the most reliable starting point is to understand what the phone is doing as you zoom.
How to choose a zoom level and lens
Use the camera app’s native telephoto lens or an optical zoom step when one is available and suits the framing you want. A zoom number on the screen is a framing control, not proof that a dedicated optical lens is active at every point. Phones can switch camera modules as you zoom, and computational zoom may combine multiple frames.
Google says supported Pixel phones select lenses automatically while zooming, and documents manual lens selection for specified devices. Apple’s quick zoom steps vary by iPhone model. Samsung describes Enhanced zoom as a feature that can switch lenses and combine frames. Check your model’s camera guidance rather than assuming another phone’s zoom behavior applies to yours.

Focus on the distant subject
In Photo mode, frame the subject and tap it in the viewfinder to focus when your camera app supports tap-to-focus. Google’s Pixel instructions for distance photos use this sequence: zoom in, tap the subject to focus, then take the photo.
If the image remains soft, check whether the selected lens can focus at that distance. A telephoto camera intended for distant subjects may not focus when the subject is too close, particularly if high zoom has switched the phone to that camera. Samsung’s US support guidance gives minimum focus distances for the 5x telephoto camera of 30 cm on Galaxy S25 Ultra and 80 cm on Galaxy S26 Ultra. Those figures apply only to those named models.

- Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
- Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
- Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
- Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
- Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.
Steady the phone and account for movement
Camera shake is more visible at high zoom. Brace your arms or the phone against something firm, or use a phone-compatible tripod for a stationary subject. A tripod steadies the camera; it does not increase the phone’s optical reach or freeze a moving subject. Samsung recommends keeping the phone still for Night mode and notes that a tripod can help.
Some models provide extra stabilization at high zoom, but the feature and activation conditions differ. Samsung describes Zoom Lock at 20x or higher after the user holds still for 1.5 seconds and touches the photo area. Google documents zoom stabilization at 15x on Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold. These are model-specific instructions, not universal thresholds.
For a moving subject, a steady phone alone is not enough: the subject can blur during exposure. When manual shutter control is available, choose a faster shutter to reduce motion blur and seek brighter light to compensate for the shorter exposure. For a stationary subject in low light, Night mode or a longer exposure can brighten the image, but the phone must remain still to limit shake.

Choose a starting setting for the situation
| Situation | Starting choice | Check or tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Bright light, distant still subject | Native telephoto lens or optical zoom step, if available; tap to focus. | Confirm the subject is within that lens’s focus range. |
| Moving subject | Faster shutter if manual control is available; use more light. | A shorter exposure admits less light, so the image may be darker. |
| Still subject in low light | Night mode or a longer exposure; stabilize the phone. | A longer exposure increases the risk of blur from camera movement. |
| Very high zoom | Use supported stabilization and let the view settle. | Features and activation conditions vary by phone model. |
| No manual controls | Stay in automatic Photo mode, use good light, steady the phone and tap to focus. | Exact controls and menu paths depend on the model. |
When to adjust shutter speed or other manual controls
Start with automatic Photo mode if you do not have manual controls or the light and subject are changing quickly. If automatic results are not working and your phone supports a Pro mode, manual adjustments may help: Samsung Pro mode includes ISO, shutter speed, exposure, focus and white balance; Google documents focus, shutter speed and ISO controls on specified Pixel Pro models.
There is no universal shutter speed or ISO value for long-range phone photos. The right choice depends on how quickly the subject moves, the available light and how steadily you can hold the phone. A faster shutter helps freeze movement but reduces light; a longer shutter brightens a static scene but gives movement more time to blur.
