Maintain weight loss by treating the end of calorie restriction as the start of a supported maintenance phase—not a return to old routines. Plan a sustainable way of eating, suitable activity, progress monitoring, and ongoing follow-up. There is no single post-diet calorie target or guaranteed method that prevents regain.
How do I transition to maintenance after a calorie-restricted diet?
Before the diet ends, make a practical plan for what comes next. Decide what eating pattern you can sustain, how you will stay active, how you will notice meaningful changes over time, and who can help you adjust if your circumstances or health needs change.
The American Diabetes Association’s Standards of Care in Diabetes—2026 recommends continued progress monitoring and support for people who reach weight-loss goals. It describes effective long-term maintenance programs—lasting at least a year—as including contact and support at least monthly, frequent body-weight monitoring (weekly or more often), other self-monitoring, and regular physical activity of 200–300 minutes per week. These are features of effective programs, not a guarantee of success or a prescription that fits everyone. Activity should be adapted to your health and ability. American Diabetes Association, Standards of Care in Diabetes—2026.
Choose support you can keep using
Arrange follow-up that fits your situation. A clinician or registered dietitian can help if you have medical needs, are uncertain how to eat after restriction, or need to adapt activity. When comparing maintenance programs, look for real ongoing contact, a monitoring approach that is acceptable to you, practical activity support, and accommodation of your health and daily life.

Do not assume you need to add calories at a fixed rate
The sources cited here do not establish a universal calorie target after dieting or a required schedule for increasing intake. Needs differ, so avoid treating a generic number or rigid “reverse dieting” timetable as medical guidance. If your plan was medically supervised, follow the transition instructions from your treating team.
What should I eat and how much should I exercise?
Build a sustainable eating pattern you can continue, rather than swinging between strict restriction and a return to habits that did not support your goals. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases recommends returning to a healthy eating plan after overeating; one episode does not have to become a reason to abandon your routine. Make regular movement part of the plan in a way that works for your circumstances. The ADA’s 200–300 minutes per week figure describes activity in effective long-term maintenance programs; it should be adapted to individual health and ability, not interpreted as a universal requirement. If you have a chronic condition or are unsure what is safe, ask your healthcare professional for advice.
How should I monitor progress?
Regular self-monitoring can help you notice trends and respond deliberately. The 2013 guideline from the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and The Obesity Society recommends regularly monitoring food intake, activity, and weight; in maintenance, it describes frequent weight checks (weekly or more often). The ADA’s 2026 guidance also includes frequent body-weight monitoring in effective maintenance programs. These recommendations support monitoring as a behavior aid, not as a stand-alone solution. 2013 AHA/ACC/TOS Guideline for the Management of Overweight and Obesity in Adults.

Weighing is optional if it is distressing or unhelpful. Discuss another monitoring approach with your clinician, such as tracking routines or other progress measures that suit your needs. If you choose to weigh yourself, use a consistent approach and pay attention to the longer-term pattern rather than treating a single reading as a verdict.
Will I regain weight when I stop dieting?
Some regain is common on average after initial weight loss, and the 2013 AHA/ACC/TOS guideline notes that regain tends to be greater over longer periods. That group-level observation cannot predict what will happen to an individual; maintenance support and circumstances vary.

For context, the guideline reported that 35%–60% of participants in high-intensity, long-term comprehensive lifestyle interventions maintained at least 5% of their initial body weight loss at follow-up of two or more years. This result applies to participants in those programs, not to everyone who diets. It also reported a different, narrowly defined outcome for people in high-intensity, medically supervised very-low-calorie interventions: 3.1–3.7 kg regained over 21–38 weeks after those interventions ended. That figure is specific to the studied programs and is not a forecast for people finishing other diets.

Use the transition plan from the clinical team that supervised your diet; do not make changes based on a general article. The ADA says structured 800–1,000 kcal/day interventions should be prescribed only for selected people by trained practitioners in medical settings with close monitoring, and that long-term maintenance counseling should be integrated into care.
