The NES library is included with standard Nintendo Switch Online; it is one part of Nintendo’s broader Nintendo Classics collections. The Expansion Pack adds select libraries for other systems, and the GameCube collection is available only on Nintendo Switch 2. Which games you can access depends on your membership, system, and region.
How the NES library fits into Nintendo Classics
“Nintendo Classics” is the umbrella branding for Nintendo’s subscription-based classic-game collections. NES is not a separate membership tier: Nintendo groups NES, Super NES, and Game Boy games with standard Nintendo Switch Online. The Expansion Pack adds select collections for additional platforms.
Nintendo of America described the combined Nintendo Classics catalog as over 270 titles in a June 16, 2026 news post. That figure covers multiple platforms, including NES, and is not an NES-only count. Nintendo’s reviewed official pages do not establish a stable exact total for the current NES library.
Which collections each membership includes
| Membership | Classic-game collections | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | NES, Super NES, and Game Boy | Access is included while the applicable membership is active. |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Standard collections, plus select Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis games | Also includes GameCube – Nintendo Classics on Nintendo Switch 2 only. Nintendo lists selected DLC and Switch 2 edition upgrade packs among Expansion Pack benefits. |
Collection and benefit availability can vary by system and country. Nintendo says the service is not available everywhere; check your local Nintendo eShop and support pages for the current offering. Nintendo’s US membership page and support FAQ describe the plan and system distinctions.

Examples from the NES library
Nintendo’s November 25, 2025 NES update added Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos and BATTLETOADS, both listed as requiring any Nintendo Switch Online membership. These are dated examples, not a complete list of games currently available.
For the live catalog, consult the NES collection listing in your region. The reviewed official information does not provide a definitive current NES-only game count, and it does not establish that every region has the same catalog.

How access works, including offline play
The classic games are subscription access, not individual game purchases through these collections. Nintendo says active members have ongoing access to the NES, Super NES, and Game Boy collections. If your membership ends, do not expect to retain access through the collection.
Nintendo UK says members can play offline after connecting the console to the internet and verifying membership at least once every seven days. That is a UK support statement; consult the support page for your region for applicable guidance. Nintendo UK support

Does the NES collection require a special controller?
No. Nintendo identifies an NES-style wireless controller 2-pack for Nintendo Switch Online members, but describes it as optional; it is not required to play the NES Classics collection. It is an accessory choice for players who prefer that controller style, not a condition of access.

- Choose standard Nintendo Switch Online if NES, Super NES, and Game Boy collections meet your needs.
- Consider the Expansion Pack if you also want its select Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, or SEGA Genesis games, or its other listed benefits.
- For GameCube Classics, use Nintendo Switch 2 with the Expansion Pack; Nintendo states that the GameCube library is only playable on that system.
