Your device can have several MAC addresses because each network interface has its own address, and Wi-Fi privacy settings may use a separate private or randomized address on each network. For a router rule or network enrollment, use the address currently shown for the specific Wi-Fi network or wired interface you’re configuring—not automatically the device’s hardware Wi-Fi address.
What a MAC address identifies
A MAC address identifies a network interface on a local network link. It is not one universal identity for a person or an entire device. A laptop with Wi-Fi and Ethernet has separate addresses; USB network adapters, docks, virtual machines, Bluetooth networking, and hotspot or peer-to-peer functions may add more interfaces. Use the address for the interface that is actually communicating: an Ethernet address will not identify a Wi-Fi connection.
An IP address is different: it is a network-layer address, not a MAC address. Do not substitute one for the other on a form requesting a MAC address.
Why Wi-Fi may show a hardware address and another address
Private or randomized Wi-Fi addressing is a privacy feature. Instead of presenting the same hardware address to every network, a device can use a different address for a particular network, making it harder for networks or nearby observers to link activity across networks. The address presented on Wi-Fi can therefore differ from the adapter’s underlying hardware address.

Apple devices
Apple’s Private Wi-Fi Address documentation says supported Apple devices identify themselves to each network using a different Wi-Fi address, which may rotate periodically. Supported systems offer Off, Fixed, and Rotating modes: Off uses the hardware address, Fixed keeps a private address for that network, and Rotating periodically changes it. Available settings and defaults depend on the operating-system release and network security characteristics.
Android
Google says Android 10 and later devices have another MAC address and documents how to view both the device’s Wi-Fi MAC and the selected network’s randomized MAC. The Android Open Source Project documentation describes randomization for client mode, SoftAp, and Wi-Fi Direct on Android 10; behavior depends on Android version and use case.

Windows
Windows 10 and Windows 11 can use random hardware addresses for Wi-Fi networks globally or for an individual saved network, where the Wi-Fi hardware supports it. The setting affects the address used when scanning and connecting. Microsoft describes the controls in its Windows guidance.
Which MAC address should you give your router?
Match the request to the interface, network, and address type. If you are registering Wi-Fi access for a device connected to the target network, the network-specific private or randomized address is usually the one the router sees. If an administrator explicitly requests the hardware, factory, or permanent address, provide that value instead and ask whether private addressing is supported if the device cannot connect.

| Address | What it represents | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Current private or randomized Wi-Fi address | The address the Wi-Fi interface presents to a particular network under its privacy setting | Usually for a router client list, access rule, reservation, or enrollment tied to that Wi-Fi connection |
| Hardware Wi-Fi address | The underlying Wi-Fi adapter address, visible in device information or when privacy addressing is off | When an administrator or device-management process specifically requests the hardware address |
| Ethernet address | The address of the wired network interface | When the connection or rule is for wired Ethernet |
If a form does not distinguish hardware from private or randomized addresses, ask the network administrator which one it needs.
How to find the address for your connection
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Tap the information button next to the specific network.
- Check Private Wi-Fi Address and Wi-Fi Address. For a router that needs to recognize the active connection, use the address shown for that network unless the administrator explicitly asks for the hardware address.

Android phone
- To find the hardware Wi-Fi address, open Settings > About phone > Wi-Fi MAC address.
- To find the address used on a particular network, turn on Wi-Fi, open Settings > Network & Internet > Internet, select the connected network’s settings, and look for Randomised MAC address.
Menu names vary by manufacturer; search Settings for “MAC address” if the path differs. Google advises including both addresses when configuring parental controls. See Google’s Android instructions.
Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi.
- Check the random hardware address setting for all Wi-Fi networks and, if applicable, the setting for the individual saved network.
- For router registration, check the network-specific setting and identify the address in use for that Wi-Fi connection. For wired access, inspect the Ethernet adapter instead.
See Microsoft’s instructions; availability depends on Wi-Fi hardware support.

Mac
- Open System Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Select Details for the network.
- Check Private Wi-Fi address and Wi-Fi address for that connection. Apple also documents the Wi-Fi MAC address in Wi-Fi advanced settings.
A Mac’s Ethernet interface has a separate address. See Apple’s private-address guidance and its Mac Wi-Fi settings documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a router may show your device more than once
Multiple router entries do not prove there are multiple physical devices. A device may have connected through different interfaces, or its Wi-Fi address may have changed because of randomization. ASUS documents duplicate client-list entries associated with random MAC behavior in its router guidance. Before changing a rule, compare the router entry with the address currently shown in the device’s settings for that network.
Should you turn off private or randomized addressing?
Usually, no. Disabling it can reduce privacy by making it easier for networks to recognize the same Wi-Fi interface across connections. First try enrolling the current network-specific address. Change the setting only when a specific network requirement calls for it, and understand that available modes and address persistence vary by platform, version, network, and setting. The IETF’s RFC 7844 describes privacy considerations and network impacts of address randomization.
