Arduino IDE 2.0 became stable on September 14, 2022, after a beta period that began in Spring 2021. Its launch introduced code assistance, project navigation, a redesigned dark theme, cloud sketch integration and a richer Serial Plotter. That was a 2022 release milestone—not a change happening today. Arduino Support’s page, last edited September 12, 2025, identifies IDE 2.x as the actively developed and recommended desktop environment.
When did Arduino IDE 2.0 leave beta?
Arduino announced the stable release on September 14, 2022. The Arduino Team said the IDE 2.0 beta had begun in Spring 2021. In its launch announcement, the team wrote: “We’re pleased to announce that as of today Arduino IDE 2.0 has moved to stable and is available for download.”
So “leaves beta” describes what happened in 2022. It does not mean the software has just left beta, nor does the announcement alone establish the status of every later 2.x release.
What was new in Arduino IDE 2.0?
The 2022 launch announcement described a desktop editor with several workflow changes:

- Code completion: Suggestions for variables and functions could draw on the sketch and its included libraries.
- Contextual navigation: Users could jump to the declaration of a variable or function from where it was used.
- Redesigned dark theme: The release added a dark appearance option.
- Remote Sketchbook: Integration with Arduino Cloud enabled sketch synchronization.
- Richer Serial Plotter: The Plotter was presented as a way to track and compare incoming data. Arduino said it could be used alongside the Serial Monitor.
- In-app IDE updates: The desktop application could notify users of updates and support updating from within the IDE.
Arduino also described compilation as faster and the editor as more responsive, but the launch material does not provide a measured compile-time benchmark or a comparative test against IDE 1.x. Treat those as the company’s qualitative descriptions, not guaranteed speed improvements for every project or computer.
How is IDE 2.x supported now?
Arduino Support’s “Supported versions of Arduino IDE” page, last edited September 12, 2025, says IDE 2.x is the only Arduino IDE version under active development and recommends using the latest version for feature enhancements, bug fixes and security patches. It describes Arduino IDE 1.8.19 as the final classic release, receiving only critical security fixes; other versions are unsupported.

- TURN CODE INTO REAL-WORLD RESULTS — Follow 22+ guided lessons to make LEDs blink, read temperature and distance, move servo and stepper motors, control an LCD and respond to joystick or IR input; ideal for a family weekend build, homeschool unit, coding club or STEM classroom
- MORE PROJECT VARIETY IN ONE ORGANIZED KIT — Includes the UNO R3 controller, LCD1602 with pre-soldered header, breadboard power module, ultrasonic and DHT11 sensors, joystick, IR receiver and remote, SG90 servo, stepper motor, relay, DC motor, fan blade, displays, LEDs, buttons, resistors and jumper wires
- START WITHOUT SOLDERING — Plug-in modules, a solderless breadboard and the pre-soldered LCD help beginners focus on wiring, code and testing; the illustrated component list makes it easier to find each part and move from one lesson to the next
- LEARN THE LOGIC, THEN CREATE YOUR OWN — Use Arduino IDE and the included example code to understand digital input and output, analog sensing, timing, motor control and display functions, then change thresholds, speeds and sequences for alarms, environmental monitors, reaction games and motion projects
- CLEAR SETUP SUPPORT FOR FIRST-TIME BUILDERS — Download the latest tutorial and code, select the UNO board and correct computer port, check component polarity and breadboard rows, and keep power-module input at 9V or below; younger learners should work with an experienced adult
| Version | Arduino Support status (page edited September 12, 2025) | Maintenance described by Arduino |
|---|---|---|
| Arduino IDE 2.x | Only version under active development; recommended | Latest version recommended for feature enhancements, bug fixes and security patches |
| Arduino IDE 1.8.19 | Final classic version; legacy | Critical security fixes only |
| Other versions | Unsupported | Not stated |
This is a support-status distinction, not a claim that every board or operating system behaves identically across versions. Check the requirements for the specific board and platform you use.
Did Arduino continue developing IDE 2 after launch?
Yes. In its Open Source Report 2023, Arduino reported five Arduino IDE 2 releases during 2023, including user-experience and reliability improvements and a major revamp of the debugging framework. The report is a dated account of that year; it does not establish the number or content of releases after 2023.

Do you need an Arduino board to use the IDE?
No physical board is required just to install the desktop IDE or explore its editor and project workflows. A board is needed for workflows that involve uploading a sketch to physical hardware or interacting with that hardware. Arduino’s 2023 report named the UNO R4 WiFi among its hardware releases, but the IDE is not limited to that model.

In the 2022 launch announcement, Arduino said IDE 2.0 was based on the Eclipse Theia framework, which it described as sharing architecture with VS Code. The company said the front end was written in TypeScript and most of the backend in Go. That is not the same as saying Arduino IDE 2.0 is VS Code.
