For basic learning and prototyping, compare the UNO R3 with the UNO R4 Minima against the libraries and parts you plan to use. Choose the UNO R4 WiFi when your project needs Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Arduino Cloud connectivity, or its built-in LED matrix. If you also need components and guided lessons, consider the Starter Kit R4. Before choosing a board for an existing build, check its exact revision, shields, libraries, voltage, pins, and physical space.

Which Arduino should I buy?

Start with what the project must do, then check what it must connect to. The UNO R3 is a familiar baseline for learning and simple prototypes; the UNO R4 Minima is a straightforward newer UNO option when you do not need wireless connectivity. The UNO R4 WiFi adds wireless features and onboard hardware. These are different boards, not interchangeable names for the same model.

Arduino says the R4 boards retain the R3’s UNO form factor, pinout, and 5 V operating voltage, but that shared layout does not guarantee that every shield, peripheral, or library will work without changes. Compare the exact board and component requirements before buying. Arduino’s R3 and R4 comparison explains the differences.

Board or option Best fit What to weigh
UNO R3 Learning or prototyping where an existing project, shield, or library specifically expects an R3 Confirm the library and peripheral support for the exact board. The R4 boards share the UNO form factor and pinout, but that alone does not establish full compatibility.
UNO R4 Minima Learning and prototyping without a wireless requirement Arduino describes it as focused on simplicity; it adds USB-C, DAC, CAN bus, and SWD compared with the classic R3 feature set.
UNO R4 WiFi Projects needing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Arduino Cloud connectivity, or an onboard LED matrix It adds an ESP32-S3 wireless module, a 12×8 LED matrix, and a Qwiic connector; check whether your particular libraries and accessories support it.
Starter Kit R4 Beginners who want a board, components, and guided projects together The documented kit includes an UNO R4 WiFi and a printed book with 13 guided projects. Check the regional package contents before purchasing.

Choose by the project you want to build

For introductory circuits and ordinary prototypes

For LEDs, buttons, and basic sensor experiments, an UNO may be a practical starting point. Choose the UNO R3 if a course or existing design calls for that exact board. Choose the UNO R4 Minima if you want an R4 without built-in wireless features. Arduino presents Minima as the simpler R4 choice for learning and prototyping. Arduino’s UNO R4 overview describes the R4 options.

For wireless or connected projects

Pick the UNO R4 WiFi if the design needs the board’s built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, or if its onboard LED matrix is useful. The board uses a Renesas RA4M1 Arm Cortex-M4 as its main microcontroller and has a separate ESP32-S3 wireless module; do not mistake the wireless module for the main MCU. Arduino lists Arduino Cloud connectivity among its R4 WiFi features. Check the board’s official product and technical details when matching specifications to a design.

For a beginner who needs parts as well as a board

The Starter Kit R4 can reduce the need to source components separately. Arduino lists an UNO R4 WiFi, a set of components, and a printed project book with 13 guided projects. Contents can vary by regional package, so confirm what is in the box before ordering. See the Starter Kit R4 listing.

Check compatibility before replacing or expanding a board

Board dimensions and pin names are only part of compatibility. For an existing build, verify each of these against the exact board revision and component documentation:

  • Board identity: identify the precise UNO model and revision, rather than relying on a product name that only says “UNO WiFi.” Arduino notes that similarly named UNO WiFi models can require different board cores. Select the matching core in your IDE; consult its UNO board overview if the model is unclear.
  • Shield and physical fit: check the shield’s supported boards, connector layout, and any mechanical constraints. Arduino describes the R4 boards as retaining the classic UNO form factor and shield compatibility, but check the specific shield rather than assuming universal support.
  • Voltage and electrical limits: confirm operating voltage and the requirements of every attached device. Arduino lists 5 V circuit operating voltage and an 8 mA maximum DC current per I/O pin for the UNO R4 WiFi; these are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.
  • Pins and peripherals: compare the required digital and analog pins, PWM, and interfaces such as UART, I²C, SPI, or CAN bus with the exact board’s specifications.
  • Libraries and board core: check whether each library supports the board’s architecture and whether the IDE has the correct board core selected. Similar physical layouts do not establish that code or libraries will work unchanged.
  • Space and installation: if the board must fit inside a compact enclosure or onto a small custom design, check whether the UNO footprint is appropriate before choosing it.

When a different Arduino family may fit better

If the UNO shape is too large or the project calls for a specialized capability, look beyond the UNO range. Arduino’s catalog includes Nano, Mega, GIGA, and specialist families; the right alternative depends on footprint and the project’s specific requirements. The catalog is a starting point, not a substitute for the chosen board’s documentation. Browse Arduino hardware, then verify the exact model’s pins, voltage, interfaces, and library support before committing to it.
