To set up MAC address filtering, open your router’s app or administration page, find its access-control or MAC-filtering settings, choose whether to allow listed devices or block them, add the device’s current Wi-Fi MAC address, and save. Menu names and rule behavior vary by router, model, and firmware. MAC filtering can help manage access, but it is not a reliable barrier against a determined intruder because MAC addresses can be copied or spoofed.

Before you change the setting

Use a wired connection to manage the router if possible, or keep another trusted connection available. An allow-only rule can disconnect the device you are using if its address is not on the list. NETGEAR specifically advises allowing the computer or device currently being used if it needs to retain access.

Find the MAC address that the device currently presents to this particular Wi-Fi network. Some Apple devices use a different private Wi-Fi address for each network, so an address recorded for another network may not work. Apple explains its private-address behavior in Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.

Set up filtering: the general sequence

  1. Sign in to the router. Use its administration app or web interface. The exact sign-in method depends on the router; consult its manual or support page if you do not know how to reach it.
  2. Find the filtering or access-control page. Look for labels such as MAC Filtering, Wireless MAC Filter, or Access Control. If prompted, select the Wi-Fi network, profile, or band to which the rule should apply.
  3. Choose the rule type. Select an allow/accept list to admit only listed devices, or a block/reject list to deny the listed devices. Read the router’s on-screen description carefully: names and behavior differ between manufacturers.
  4. Add the device. Select it from a connected-client list if the router provides one, or enter its current Wi-Fi MAC address manually. Confirm the address belongs to the correct network and device.
  5. Save and test. Apply the change, then check that the intended device can connect and that other devices behave as expected. Before using an allow-only rule, verify that the administrator’s device is included.

Allow list or block list?

Choice Intended result What to verify
Allow/accept list Only listed devices are permitted by implementations that enforce the list for the selected network or profile. Include every device that should connect, especially the device managing the router. Check whether the rule applies to one band, profile, or the whole network.
Block/reject list Listed devices are denied; other devices are not excluded by that list. Confirm that the router’s rule blocks the intended device and determine whether it affects existing connections or only later attempts.

Vendor terminology is not uniform: TP-Link offers Block List and Allow List, ASUS uses Reject and Accept, and Linksys describes deny-listed and allow-only choices. The interface on your own router takes precedence over these examples.

TP-Link

For the CR1900 V1, Archer CR500 V1, and Archer CR700 V2 covered by TP-Link’s guide, the web path is Advanced > Wireless 2.4G or Wireless 5G > MAC Filtering. Select the interface, enable filtering, choose Block List or Allow List, add the address, and save. NETGEAR

In the documented web interface, go to ADVANCED > Security > Access Control, turn Access Control on, choose a rule, and apply it. NETGEAR notes that its “Block all new devices” rule applies to devices joining after the setting is applied. Where relevant, its allowed list needs both Ethernet and Wi-Fi MAC addresses. See How do I configure Access Control or MAC Filtering on my NETGEAR router?.

ASUS

ASUS documents both app and web workflows. Supported newer firmware uses a main network profile and Accept, Reject, or Disable; older firmware may show Wireless > Wireless MAC Filter. Available functions depend on model and firmware. Follow How to set up Wireless MAC Filter on ASUS Router (WiFi Deny List)? for your device.

Linksys

For the Smart WiFi interface covered by Linksys, open Wireless > MAC Filtering, enable the feature, then choose whether to deny access to listed MAC addresses or allow access only to listed addresses. Linksys says enabling MAC filtering disables WPS on these routers. Check the instructions for your model at How to configure MAC Filtering on a Linksys router.

If you cannot find the setting

  • Check the support page and manual for the exact model and hardware revision; the option may use a different name or location.
  • Check whether your router’s firmware is current. NETGEAR recommends updating firmware and consulting the manual if Access Control is absent.
  • Some models or firmware versions may not offer the feature, or may expose different controls in an app and web interface. Do not assume that a missing menu means another menu path applies.

What MAC filtering can and cannot secure

Apple recommends setting MAC address filtering, authentication, or access control to Disabled as a security recommendation. Its guidance explains that MAC addresses can be copied, spoofed, or changed, and that filtering does not stop network observers from monitoring or intercepting traffic. Filtering is therefore best treated as a basic access-management convenience, not as protection against a determined Wi-Fi intruder.
